Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features George Christopher of the men's lacrosse team. The Big Green's starting goalie as a rookie appeared in six games throughout his sophomore season before being sidelined with an injury. Even then, he was seventh in the Ivy League in goals against average and fifth in saves per game.
DartmouthSports: What was the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
George Christopher: The people really sold me during my process. I felt like I was connected with the people at Dartmouth and I shared similar interests and experiences. They were inclusive, and I was really excited to spend four years with the people that I met.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
GC: I would probably switch with
George Prince. He plays attack and I play goalie, so it would be fun to get to play on the other side of the ball. Plus, I really admire the way George plays the game. He's very patient and slick, which makes him fun to watch. Also, he's a year younger, so I would be able to have one more sophomore summer.
DS: How is Hanover similar or different to where you grew up?
GC: I am from just outside Washington, D.C. I went to school a mile from the capitol building, used the metro to get around and lived in a metropolitan environment. So, the environment is the biggest difference. Honestly, I love walking in the rolling hills of New Hampshire and being in a place where it is much easier to hang outside.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
GC: I will never forget beating Vermont my freshman year. The game was a battle, and it ended up going our way at the end of the game. It was my first collegiate win, and I will never forget it.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
GC: I would want to play hockey. I have been a huge fan since I was a kid, but played basketball in the winter, so I never really took the time to play. I have always loved my hometown Washington Capitals, so if I wasn't playing lacrosse, I hope I could give hockey a try.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
GC: I am really passionate about music. I always have my headphones in when I study and walk around campus. I really like to pick apart songs and hear all the parts that combine to make the music that I like. I also play guitar on top of just being a music fan.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
GC: My friends have the biggest influence on my life. We practice together, live together and are navigating the same stages of life together. Fun times are better with your friends, and tough times aren't as tough. Having a group to have your back and having theirs is a special and defining experience, which I am very grateful to have. I am very grateful to Dartmouth for giving me the opportunity to meet these people who grace my life.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
GC: Try things that make you a little bit uncomfortable. Doing this helps you grow as a person and usually leads to some of your fondest memories. Also, find out what you are passionate about and pursue those passions unapologetically.
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
GC: I am interning at Normandy Real Estate Partners.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
GC: Cape Town, South Africa. It is a beautiful town in a beautiful country. Furthermore, Cape Town has a rich
history of trade and exploration, as it served as a major port city. The stories and history that have flowed through that place would make it an unreal place to study, learn and explore.
