IOWA CITY, Iowa. – The Dartmouth field hockey team bounced back in a big way in its second game of the season Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Big Green defeated Ball State, 5-1, in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The game took place on Iowa's Grant Field.
Â
The Green and White fell behind, 1-0, early as Abby Ferenczy scored the Cardinals' first goal of the season just 2:37 in. However, it didn't take long for the Big Green to answer back as their first goal of 2018 came off the stick of junior
Katie Persin at the 5:19 mark with
Maddie Donahue picking up the helper.
Â
The team in green then took the lead in the 22nd minute as sophomore
Kira Koehler found the back of the cage with a shot after a pass from
Tatum Schultz.Â
Â
The offensive push continued in the 27th minute for Dartmouth as junior
Jocelyn Wulf knocked home a rebound for her third career marker and a 3-1 lead it would carry into halftime.
Â
The trend continued coming out of the break as 2017 Ivy League Second Teamer
Katie Spanos notched her first of the year in the 39th minute, while freshman
Gracyn Campbell redirected a ball in the 46th that found space and a path into the net for the first goal of her career. Donahue was credited with the helper on the play, her second assist of the afternoon after coming into the game having never registered a point in 35 previous games.
Â
After falling behind early, the Big Green put together a dominant performance, outshooting the Cardinals, 18-4. A day after falling 6-0 to Iowa and being held without a corner to the Hawkeyes' 12, the Green had a 6-0 edge in corners against Ball State.
Â
Senior
Hailey Valerio posted three saves in earning her first win of the season, before giving way to freshman
Isabella Santucci for the final 14 and a half minutes of action. Ball State's Grace Chavez was tested all afternoon and finished with five saves, while allowing the five markers.
Â
The Big Green open the home portion of the 2018 schedule this Friday when they play host to Vermont at 4 p.m. This year's battle against its regional rival at Chase Field will be carried live on ESPN+ as will all home games and road Ivy League contests.
