HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team defeated visiting Holy Cross, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.
Â
A dominating performance could have been even greater were it not for the play of Crusaders (0-7) goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante and her 22 saves.
Â
Even with the strong play of the visitors' keeper, the Big Green (3-3) had a pair of goals from
Kira Koehler in addition to tallies from
Evie Bird,
Gracyn Campbell, and Tatum Schutlz.
Â
For Koehler, it was the first two-goal game of her career and actually tied her total output from her freshman campaign in 2017. This year, she has three goals and is tied for second on the team with Campbell after Sunday's victory.
Â
Schultz scored the game's opening marker just 5:07 into the contest only to have Emily Loprete tie things up a minute and 24 seconds later and then Lauren Ineson give the visitors a 2-1 lead with a score in the 22nd minute. Ineson's score gave Holy Cross more than one goal in a game for the first time this season.
Â
However, Campbell's aforementioned third goal of the season in the 24th minute and Koehler's first of two on the day in the 34th sent Dartmouth to the break with a 3-2 edge.
Â
Bird's first of the season was a great individual effort to get her own rebound and bury the second shot into the net in the 53rd minute, while five minutes later Koehler's second was result of gaining control off a
Katie Persin rebound.
Â
Dartmouth managed an astounding 45 shots (45-19) in the game with 28 reaching the net. LaPlante's 22 saves were the second-most by any Division I goalkeeper in a game this year, trailing only the 28 stopped by… Laplante at Harvard on Sept. 2.
Â
Senior
Hailey Valerio turned in six saves herself in a game in which she saw spurts of action in front of her as the play remained at the other end of the field for long stretches of time.
Â
Junior
Katie Spanos had her four-game goal streak snapped, but remains the team leader with four this season.
Â
The Big Green open Ivy League play next Saturday with a noon game at Princeton. That game will be carried live on ESPN+.
