RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR
The Dartmouth women's hockey team will open 2019 with five straight home games, starting with Quinnipiac and Princeton on Jan. 4-5. Both contests can be viewed on ESPN+, while the one against the Tigers on Saturday can also be watched on NESNPlus.
LAST TIME OUT
Lotti Odnoga netted her first collegiate goal in the 4-1 loss to Connecticut at the Freitas Ice Forum on Dec. 30.
Dartmouth had a 13-7 shot advantage and a number of good chances in the first period, but it was UConn that broke the scoreless tie when Natalie Snodgrass slotted it top shelf before the midway point.
Kate Landers had a great opportunity to even the score in the second on a breakaway, but her shot was saved by goalie Morgan Fisher's facemask. The Huskies picked up the rebound and scored their second goal soon after.
Jennifer Costa had a good opportunity of her own, but Fisher got that one, too.
The third period was an exciting one, as three goals were scored in less than 11 minutes. At 5:30, the Huskies further increased their lead, but Dartmouth's persistence paid off at 9:32 of the third when Odnoga scored her first goal of her career to lessen UConn's lead to two.
Christina Rombaut assisted on the play to pick up a point. The home team added one more at 16:05 to end the game.
Dartmouth had a 28-22 shot advantage. The Big Green went 0-for-2 on the power play, but also killed off both of their penalties. In net,
Christine Honor made 18 saves.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Quinnipiac enters Friday's game with an overall record of 5-11-3 and a 4-5-1 mark in ECAC Hockey play. Since their overtime loss to the Big Green back in early November, the Bobcats have gone 2-6-1, defeating UConn (3-2) and Union (3-1), falling to Cornell (1-2), Merrimack (0-2), Providence (1-2) and Princeton (2-3, 1-4) and RPI (0-1), while tying Colgate (3-3). Melissa Samoskevich and Kenzie Lancaster lead the team with nine points each, while Samoskevich has a team-leading six goals and Lancaster is first with her six helpers.
LAST TIME AGAINST QUINNIPIAC
On Nov. 3, Costa's first collegiate goal scored with just over a minute to go in overtime lifted Dartmouth over Quinnipiac at the Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena. The Green were the first team to score against the Bobcats in almost a month.
Seven different players combined for eight points, being led by
Tess Bracken with her two points from a goal and an assist.
Bailee Brekke scored the second goal, while
Sara McClanahan,
Rose Falzone, Rombaut and
Caroline Shaunessy picked up assists. Honor ended the game with 23 saves, earning her first win of the year.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
League leader Princeton heads into the weekend with an overall record of 10-2-4 and is 8-0-2 in conference action, sitting comfortably ahead of Cornell with its 6-1-1 mark. The Tigers have not lost a game since falling to Wisconsin on Oct. 21 and are currently on a 14-game unbeaten streak since then. Most recently, Princeton faced Merrimack twice, tying the Warriors, 1-1, in the first game before coming back to take them down, 5-3, the following afternoon. Carly Bullock is first in both goals (13) and points (24), while Sarah Fillier leads the team with her 14 helpers.
LEADING THE WAY
Bracken and McClanahan remain tied for first on the team with seven points each. Bracken has netted four goals and added on three assists, while McClanahan has three goals and four helpers. Rombaut and Odnoga are close behind with their six points.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Honor has played in and started 12 of the team's 14 games and has made 308 saves and allowed 36 goals.
Kayla Wormsbecher has started the other two and appeared in three contests, stopping 62 shots while allowing eight goals.
