HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's tennis senior
Charlie Broom won the ITA Northeast Regional Championship on Tuesday.
Â
Broom started the day with his semifinal match against Kevin Zhu of Penn, dropping the first set, 7-6(8) before rebounding to win the remaining two, 6-3, 6-2. Facing Columbia's Jackie Tang in the final, Broom had a 6-3, 7-5 victory to win the championship for the first time in his career and qualify for a national event in Arizona next month.
"Charlie had a great tournament," head coach
Xander Centenari said. "He's been deliberate with his work from day to day and has been playing better as the fall has gone on. He stayed composed on break points, deuce points and deep in sets, and was clear on the style that he needed to play in those moments. I think he settled in a bit more in each match and played his most complete and committed match in the finals."
Â
The last Dartmouth player to win regionals was Dovydas Sakinis in 2015.
Â
Broom paired up with classmate
David Horneffer for finals of doubles and the Big Green duo played a good match against Princeton's Ryan Seggerman and Payton Holden, but ultimately fell, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Â
"Dave and Charlie are playing really committed doubles right now," Centenari continued. "They are tactically making good decisions and putting themselves in good positions on court over and over again in every round they played. I give credit to Princeton; they served really well on break points and executed better on one or two points that decided the match. The final was a high level of doubles, and our guys left everything out there."
Â
Next weekend, Dartmouth will head to Yale for the Connecticut State Championship.
