Kayla Wormsbecher won her first game of the season
HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey closed out 2019 with a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce at Thompson Arena on Friday evening.
Junior netminder Kayla Wormsbecher got her first start of the season, after having not appeared in net since November of last year. She had 15 saves while earning her first collegiate win.
Four different players ended up with a point apiece. Freshman CC Bowlby netted her fifth tally of the season, and junior Katerina Dajia scored her first of the year and the second of her career. Sophomore Gabby Billing picked up her team-leading eighth assist, while senior Sydney Hill got her first point of the season by assisting on the second goal.
"I thought our team played with good energy and better poise this evening," head coach Laura Schuler said. "Franklie Pierce played us hard and Kayla did a great job in net for us. Overall, this was a nice way to finish up the first half of the season."
The Big Green had a 9-1 shot advantage in the first but were unable to get past netminder Emma Ostrander. Dartmouth (4-7-2) looked a lot better in the second period, scoring twice in a four-minute span. Bowlby opened scoring at 6:15, while Dajia scored the eventual game winner at 10:17. Wormsbecher had eight saves to bring her two-period total to nine.
The home team enjoyed a two-goal lead for over 20 minutes until Franklin Pierce (11-5-0) got one back at 12:46 of the third. Ostrander kept turning shots away until freshman Catherine Trevors almost gave Dartmouth its third of the night. She intercepted a pass deep in Raven territory and the red light went on, but her shot ended up hitting the pipe.
The Green had a 31-16 shot advantage, outshooting the Ravens in all three periods. Neither team was able to score on the power play; Dartmouth went 0-for-1 and Franklin Pierce went 0-for-4.
After the break, the Big Green will host four in a row, starting with Rensselaer and Union (Jan. 3-4).
