MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — For the first time in 11 years, neither Dartmouth nor Vermont finished atop the heap in one of the EISA carnivals as Middlebury edged out the Big Green by seven points in the Panthers' home carnival this weekend. Middlebury won the men's giant slalom today while Dartmouth took the women's 5K freestyle and the Catamounts claimed the other two events, but the Panthers did just enough in those other three events to leap frog over the Big Green in the standings by a 915-908 margin. Vermont finished in third place with a total of 875 points.
Dartmouth put four skiers on the podium today, led by sophomore
Katharine Ogden in the women's 5K freestyle as she crossed the finish line at the Rikert Nordic Center in second place with a time of 12:56.3, fewer than five seconds behind Vermont's Evelina Sutro (12:51.5). The remaining five Big Green skiers all finished among the top nine with senior
Lydia Blanchet (13:10.2) joining Ogden on the podium in third and junior
Lauren Jortberg squeaking past another Catamount skier for fourth in 13:19.8. Junior
Leah Brams (13:40.7, seventh), freshman
Molly Gellert (13:48.9, eighth) and senior
Taryn Hunt-Smith (13:51.0, ninth) all had strong races as well with Dartmouth amassing 132 points for the team title, ahead of Vermont in second with 119 with Middlebury third (97).
The Catamounts and Panthers combined to take the top five slots in the men's 10K freestyle, led by Vermont's Karl Schulz in 22:11.2 with his teammate, Bill Harmeyer, nine seconds behind in second place. Senior Callan Deline, who took second in the 15K classic yesterday, settled for seventh in 22:37.7, while classmate
Gavin McEwen finished 11th in 22:57.5 and sophomore
Adam Glueck 20th in 23:26.6. That trio totaled 86 points to finish third in the event with Vermont easily outdistancing Middelbury, 138-116.
The men's giant slalom at the Snow Bowl was dominated by the hosts and Dartmouth as the Panthers claimed the top two steps of the podium with Erik Arvidsson winning for the second straight day, this time by 0.31 seconds in 2:05.87. Sophomore
Drew Duffy grabbed the other slot on the podium, narrowly beating out his teammate,
David Domonoske, by 0.06 seconds in 2:06.27. Middlebury's Justin Alkier eked past junior
Kipling Weisel by that very same margin as the latter settled for sixth in 2:06.91. That left the Big Green with 122 points to the Panthers' 136, well ahead of Vermont in third with 94.
Each of the top three schools were represented in the women's giant slalom as Caroline Bartlett won the gold for Middlebury in 2:12.57. Junior
Stephanie Currie (2:13.14) was barely beat out for second place by Vermont's Francesca English (2:13.10) to pick up her fourth podium of the year and seventh of her career. Senior
Alexa Dlouhy posted a combined time of 2:13.64, putting her behind two other Catamount skiers to take sixth overall, and freshman
Ellie Curtis wrapped up the Big Green scoring in 11th with a combined time of 2:15.29. Vermont picked up 127 points while Middlebury managed 118 and Dartmouth 110 in the team standings.
The Big Green return to their home slopes at the Dartmouth Skiway tomorrow to race the giant slalom that was postponed from Winter Carnival last weekend as an NCAA qualifying event. Next weekend, Dartmouth will compete in the NCAA East Regional hosted by Bates on Friday and Saturday.
