HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth Winter Carnival began today with only the freestyle races completed as the slopes at the Dartmouth Skiway proved to be too icy and dangerous for the giant slalom, which was postponed until Sunday, Feb. 17.
The Big Green won the women's 10K free as two skiers landed on the podium and seven of the top 11 raced for Dartmouth. The men's 15K went to Vermont, though Colby's Zane Fields easily took the gold by nearly 90 seconds. With the Catamounts' second-place showing in the women's race, they edged out the Big Green for the day with 248 points to 220 for the hosts and 202 for Colby in third.
Both cross country races featured an interval start with Dartmouth junior
Leah Brams the first to complete the course for the women's 10K in 31:58.2, good for 10th place by the time everyone had finished. The Big Green continued to pressure the other teams with five of Brams' teammates topping her time, led by sophomore
Katharine Ogden who finished comfortably in second place in 30:19.4. Junior
Lauren Jortberg took the last spot on the podium with a time of 31:12.4 with senior
Lydia Blanchet in fourth at 31:18.0. Freshman
Molly Gellert continued to impress by placing seventh in 31:51.1, and senior
Taryn Hunt-Smith just squeaked past Brams in ninth in 31:57.1.
Although Vermont's Lina Sutro won the race, beating out Ogden by nearly 15 seconds (30:04.6), Dartmouth won the event with 132 points compared to 120 for the Catamounts.
The men started up their 15K shortly thereafter with Colby's Zane Fields coasting to a win by a wide margin of nearly 90 seconds in 43:32.5. Senior Callan Deline led the Big Green with a time of 45:49.3, slotting him ninth on this day, while his classmate,
Gavin McEwen, claimed 14th in 46:28.5. A third senior,
Koby Gordon, was the other to score for Dartmouth in 22nd place with a time of 47:38.3.
Vermont took the other two podium spots with three others finishing in the top 10 to amass 128 points while Colby and Williams shared second with 105 and Dartmouth finished fourth with 88.
The carnival will continue tomorrow morning with the slalom races at the Dartmouth Skiway beginning at 9 a.m. and the 3x5K classical relay at Oak Hill slated to start at 10 a.m.
