TROY, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey found the back of the net first, but was ultimately defeated by Rensselaer, 5-2, at Houston Field House on Friday evening.
Freshmen
Sara McClanahan and
Gabby Billing were credited with the Big Green's goals, while junior
Bailee Brekke and senior
Sydney Hill assisted. Fellow senior
Christine Honor played the first 20 minutes in net and had four saves. Classmate
Shannon Ropp appeared in net for the remaining two periods, stopping 13 shots.
"Tonight, we had glimpses of a good effort, but it wasn't consistent enough," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "We need to play a simple game. I think we tried to complicate things by making some plays that really weren't there instead of making the easy play. It was nice to get both a power play and a shorthanded goal and we will take those positives into the game tomorrow."
The first period was an eventful one, as three goals were scored in just over five minutes. Dartmouth (4-19-1, 3-14-0) was in control at the start and, at 10:10, McClanahan's backhanded power-play tally gave the Big Green a 1-0 edge. RPI (12-12-5, 9-7-1) responded by scoring twice in nine seconds to take a one-goal lead into the second.
The Engineers continued to be plagued with penalties, having already been sent to the box five times through the first period and a half. Playing shorthanded at 6:15 of the second, RPI found the back of the net to make it a 3-1 game. Dartmouth remained ahead in shots, sporting a 22-13 advantage after two.
RPI added two more goals in the third. Dartmouth kept taking good shots and was stopped each time until the final minute of play. At 19:07, Billing backhanded the puck past Lovisa Selander to score Dartmouth's second shorthanded goal of the season. The last time the Green had more than one goal while down a player in a season was in 2014-15, when they had three.
The visitors led in shots from start to finish, ending the game with a 32-22 advantage. Dartmouth went 1-for-5 on the power play while killing off all four of its penalties.
Next up, the Big Green will head to Schenectady to face Union at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
