Dozen Skiers to NCAAs
Dartmouth qualified the full allotment of 12 skiers for the NCAA Championships for the fourth straight year and fifth time in the last six. All but four of those dozen skiers have competed at the NCAAs a combined 16 times previously with seniors
Lydia Blanchet,
Callan Deline and
Alexa Dlouhy all making their fourth trips to the championships.
Back to Defend Their Titles
Two of the Big Green skiers won a total of three NCAA races last year.
Katharine Ogden won both the women's 15K freestyle and 5K classical races as a freshman, becoming not only the first Nordic female to win an NCAA title for Dartmouth, but also the first Big Green skier to win more than one event at a single championship in 56 years. And
Tanguy Nef won the men's slalom, Dartmouth's first slalom champion in a dozen years.
All-Americans
Six of the 12 Big Green skiers have previously earned All-America honors a total of 14 times. Two of the six have three such honors to their name:
•
Lydia Blanchet — CL 2nd team, 2018
•
Callan Deline — CL 1st team and FS 2nd team, 2018
•
Alexa Dlouhy — SL 2nd team, 2016-18
•
Lauren Jortberg — FS 2nd team, 2018; CL 2nd team, 2017
•
Tanguy Nef — GS and SL 1st team, 2018; SL 2nd team, 2017
•
Katharine Ogden — CL and FS 1st team, 2018
Vying for Fourth NCAA Title
After winning two of the six carnivals in the East and placing a close second in the other four, Dartmouth is looking to earn its fourth NCAA title, having won the championship in 1958, '76 and most recently, 2007. The teams from the West have dominated, however, winning 10 of the 11 titles since the Big Green last finished atop the heap, and the 12 before that. A total of 66 NCAA champions have been crowned throughout the years, but only Vermont (6) and Dartmouth (3) have won from the East.
Carnival Victories
After winning five of six carnivals in 2017 and '18, the Big Green settled for "just" two this year, though they placed second in the other four by an average of 14.5 points. Over the last four years, Dartmouth has won 14 of the 24 carnivals, with its first of two wins in 2016 ending a near four-year drought.
EISA Champions
The Big Green claimed their third straight EISA title two weeks ago at Bates, edging out Vermont by only eight points, 973-965. The two schools split the eight events with Dartmouth winning both women's Nordic and men's alpine races. The Big Green had three individual skiers earn the gold with eight others stepping on the podium as well. Sophomore
Katharine Ogden won the women's 15K Classic, and junior
Tanguy Nef won the men's slalom (his sixth straight win in the event). Joining the victory parade was senior
James Ferri in the men's giant slalom, which was not only his first career win but also his first podium.
EISA Alpine Rookies of the Year
While
Drew Duffy and
Tricia Mangan were new to the college skiing scene this year, the sophomores had more than just a little experience on the slopes. Duffy made his World Cup debut in 2015 and last year finished 12th in the super-G at the National Championships. And Mangan competed in the 2018 Olympics, helping Team USA finish ninth in the alpine team event. The duo was named the EISA Male and Female Alpine Rookies of the Year as Duffy won four races and reached the podium eight times, while Mangan placed second on five occasions.
NCAA Individual Champions
Dartmouth has had 39 individual NCAA champions throughout the years with a majority coming in the alpine races. Last year, the Big Green had four champions in the eight events, two courtesy of
Katharine Ogden in the women's cross country races, and the other two in the men's alpine races from
Tanguy Nef (slalom) and
Brian McLaughlin (giant slalom). That was one title than Dartmouth had earned in the previous decade combined, and all three of those came in the men's 10K freestyle by Glenn Randall (2008), Sam Tarling (2011) and Patrick Caldwell (2015).
Earlier in the 2000s, the Big Green had five different alpine skiers win the slalom — Roger Brown (2002), Bradley Wall (2003), Paul McDonald (2004), David Chodounsky (2005) and Karl Johnson (2006). Only one other school has had an individual win a specific event five straight years — Denver won men's jumping in the first five years of the NCAA Championships (1954-58), although the first three were won by the same skier.
Dartmouth have had only three women win NCAA individual titles — Anouk Patty in 1988 and Jen Collins in 1996, both in the giant slalom, and
Katharine Ogden last year in the freestyle and classic. Ogden is back to defend her titles this year and attempt to increase her career total.
Going for the Gold
Seven different Dartmouth skiers won a total of 17 carnival races this year —
Tanguy Nef and
Drew Duffy four each, and
Alexa Dlouhy and
Katharine Ogden three apiece, while
Lydia Blanchet,
Stephanie Currie and
James Ferri all won one. On top of that, the Big Green had 29 more podium finishes for a total of 46 in the top three. That constitutes one-third of all podiums throughout the carnival season.
Big Green in the Olympics
Dartmouth had no less than 14 alums and students compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, including current member
Tricia Mangan. Of those 14, no less than 13 competed for the United States, 10 competed (or would compete) for Dartmouth as collegians and nine have been members of the Big Green ski team. Those nine are:
* Rosie Brennan '11 — cross country
* Patrick Caldwell '17 — cross country
* Sophie Caldwell '12 — cross country
* David Chodounsky '08 — alpine
* Susan Dunklee '08 — biathlon
* Annie Hart '14 — cross country
*
Tricia Mangan '21 — alpine
* Ida Sargent '11 — cross country
* Tucker Murphy '04 — cross country (Bermuda)
