HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's swimming and diving head coach
James Holder announced the 2018-19 team awards at the team's end-of-season banquet.
Â
For the second year in a row,
Connor LaMastra received the Karl B. Michael Award. Michael, after whom the Dartmouth pool is named, retired as head coach in 1970 after 28 years on deck. He had an impressive 218-91 record, produced 37 All-American swimmers and was awarded the National Collegiate and Scholastic Trophy in 1967. This award is given to the member of the squad who has given the most to the team. LaMastra swam well at Ivies last week, breaking his own record in the 500 free while being part of the record-breaking 800 free relay. He also swam the 400 IM, 200 fly, 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.
Â
Paul Cane received the Glover Trophy for being the most inspirational member of the team. Against Columbia in February, Cane was second in the 200 breast and sixth in the 100 breast. John Glover, a three-time All-American, captain and holder of 35 records during his collegiate career, died at the Yale Pool while training for an Olympic berth in 1956.
Â
The Most Outstanding Freshman Award went to
Joe Moll. Competing in the Ivy League Championship for the first time, he made it back to finals in the 500 and 1000 free and 200 back and was also part of the 400 medley relay and 800 free relay.
Â
John Hall was given the Paul E. Tsongas Most Improved Award. The award was named in honor of Tsongas, who was a four-year member of the team (1958-62) and was a quiet, yet effective leader. The U.S. Senator, who ran for presidency in 1992, died of cancer in 1997. At Ivies, Hall swam well in the 50 and 200 free, and was part of the 800 free relay, 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 400 medley relay.
Â
The Lutkus Award is given to the swimmer or diver proven to be an outstanding and consistent performer during the season and has maintained a high academic standing. For the second year in a row, the award was given to
Carter Jacobsen. During his last trip to Ivies, Jacobsen swam the 50, 100 and 200 free and was part of the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay.
Â
Justin Sodokoff was named the Ron Keenhold Outstanding Diver for the second time. Keenhold was both a swimming and diving coach at Dartmouth for four decades who has numerous accolades as an All-American diver. At Ivies, Sodokoff had a great showing on 3-meter, taking third overall.
Â
The Tate Ramsden Coaches Award is given annually in honor of Ramsden '17, who passed away on Dec. 26, 2015, while training in Florida. This award is determined by the coaches and presented to the swimmer or diver whose character and commitment to the team best exemplifies the spirt of Dartmouth swimming. In its second year, the award was given to
Connor Richmond, who competed in the 200 IM, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay at Ivies.
Â
At the conclusion of the banquet, it was announced that Hall, Tang-e Tan and
Ray Neistat will serve as captains for the 2019-20 season.
