HANOVER, N.H. –
George Christopher had a career-high 18 saves in Dartmouth men's lacrosse's 13-4 loss to Princeton at Scully-Fahey Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Â
"The story of the game was our finishing," head coach
Brendan Callahan said. "We had a lot of opportunities early on and when you play Princeton, you have to be able to score, and we weren't able to. This was a good defensive effort. We just weren't able to put it in the back of the net.
Â
"George was the anchor for us in net," Callahan said. "He had a tall task coming in and gave us a chance to win. I am most proud of his effort. And Kiernan was great at the X. He came out and battled. I am proud of how we played on the ground. We out groundballed them and we were good in the clearing game. We are seeing improvements in areas, but we need it all to come together."
Â
The teams were very evenly matched to start the first quarter, trading goals until the score was tied at 2-2 following goals by
Ben Martin and
George Prince. Princeton (6-6, 1-3 Ivy) took control, scoring twice in 90 seconds to pull ahead by two, but a second tally for Prince with 2:16 to go got Dartmouth (2-9, 0-4 Ivy) within one (4-3).
Â
The Green survived 12 seconds of 6-on-4 play in the second, thanks in part to a huge timely save by Christopher. Good defense and better goaltending kept both teams out of the net for the first seven minutes until two in a row gave the Tigers their first three-goal advantage of the game. Dartmouth tried, but could not get past goalie Erik Peters this time around (6-3).
Â
Princeton scored its third and fourth unanswered tallies midway through the third and soon sported an 8-3 edge. Christopher did a good job keeping the Tigers at bay, making four big stops in a six-minute span before Princeton got another one past him.
Trevor Ballantyne ended the Green's drought with 1:19 remaining, netting Dartmouth's first goal since the first quarter (9-4).
Â
The Tigers scored four tallies in the fourth quarter to put more distance between them and the Big Green (13-4). Dartmouth never stopped trying to get another on the board, but missed the mark a number of times.
Â
The Big Green will play their last road game of the year next Saturday, April 20, when they head to Philadelphia to face Penn, who just claimed their first Ivy regular season title since the 1980's.
