The Big Green exploded for 16 runs in game two
ITHACA, N.Y. – Dartmouth played a pair of five inning games at Cornell on Saturday and came away with a split for the day. The Big Red showed their power at the plate and put up its highest run total of the season to take game one, 13-4. The Big Green then scored a season high to win game two, 16-1.
After the day, Dartmouth is now 7-24 overall and 4-10 in the Ivy League, while Cornell's record goes to 7-29 and 3-11 in conference games. The game one loss for the Big Green snaps an 11 game winning streak against the Big Red dating back to 2013.
Game One:
Cornell slammed four home runs in game one, including three in the fifth inning to run away with a 13-4 victory.
Micah Schroder went 2-2 at the plate with three runs driven in, while Calista Almer was also perfect at the plate going 2-2 with two runs scored.
Cornell wasted no time and got on the board in the first inning with an RBI base hit. Billie McFadyen did the same for Dartmouth in the top of the third to tie the game at one.
Five Big Red runners crossed the plate in the home half of the third. With the bases loaded, Allison Kerce doubled to score two runs and another scored on a fielding error. Kerce then scored from third on a sacrifice fly and Bridgette Rooney finished the inning with a solo home run to extend the Cornell lead to 6-1.
The seventh run for Cornell scored in the fourth on an RBI single to bring its lead to 7-1. With two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth, Micah Schroder came through with a three RBI double to left center to cut the deficit to 7-4 and give Dartmouth a chance to make a comeback.
Cornell put an end to the game in a big way in the bottom of the fifth. Hanna Crist smacked a lead off homer to jumpstart the inning. Two runnners reached base for Emily Muniz who sent a three-run shot to center to grow the lead to 11-4. Finally, with one runner on, Kerce banged the ball off the scoreboard in left to walk it off for the Big Red.
Game Two:
Dartmouth completely flipped the script in game two to come away with a 16-1 shellacking of Cornell in five innings.
Heather Turner got the start and threw a complete game. The sophomore allowed just one earned on three hits with one strikeout.
At the plate, Micah Schroder finished 3-3 with four RBI, Taylor Ward went 3-3 with two RBI, and Calista Almer was perfect as well going 2-2 with one run driven in. Schae Neslon and McKenna Gray both had multi-hit games as the Big Green had 17 hits compared to three for the Big Red.
Ward set the tone in the first inning and blasted a two-run home run to start the domination.
After no runs were scored in the second, Almer and Ward reached base for Schroder who doubled them both home to extend the lead to 4-0.
Five runs touched home late in the fourth. Morgan Ebow hit a two-bagger to score Gray, then Almer singled up the middle to bring home Ebow. Schroder kept it going with a base knock to bring around Almer. Schroder scored on an error later in the inning. The fifth run of the inning came home when Morgan Martinelli reached on an error and Neslon was able to cross the plate. The Big Green led 9-0 at the end of the fourth.
Cornell plated its only run of the game in bottom of the fourth with a solo home run.
Dartmouth responded with a seven-run fifth. Schroder and Nelson hit back-to-back singles, Abby Shipley drilled a two-RBI double and Gray hit a ground-rule double to score two more and complete the 16-1 victory.
The Big Green will look for the series win on Sunday when they take on Cornell at 12:30 p.m.
