HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth men's lacrosse played a great first half but could not hold back a strong Brown team and eventually fell by a score of 11-7 on Senior Day Saturday.
Â
Matt Paul,
Harlan Smart,
Trevor Ballantyne and
George Prince all ended the game with two points apiece, while three other players had one point.
Daniel Hincks played all 60 minutes, making 13 saves in all.
Â
"I thought we came out ready to play," head coach
Brendan Callahan said. "We played with tremendous energy and fight and we played harder than they were. They came out in the third and had three goals off loose balls in front of the next and changed momentum going forward. We weren't able to stop the run, they got a couple goals, we couldn't stop their No. 17 and that was the difference.
Â
"Our ride stood out today," Callahan continued. "We caused a bunch of turnovers. It was great to see Hincks have a good game with his 13 saves and our offense was very well-rounded. I am appreciative of our seniors' efforts. They taught us what it means to work hard and enjoy every day. They were excited to be at practice and really showed love for the game."
Â
Smart got Dartmouth (2-11, 0-6 Ivy League) on the board at 11:05 of the first quarter and the Green enjoyed their one-goal edge for less than a minute before Brown (7-8, 3-3 Ivy League) responded three times in three minutes to steal the lead. Hincks kept the visitors out of the net for the remaining seven minutes, while
Jimmy Heidt netted his third of the season to get Dartmouth within one heading to the second (3-2).
Â
After trailing, 3-1, until late in the first quarter, Dartmouth turned it around, scoring four unanswered tallies to take a 5-3 lead. Having assisted on Smart's goal in the opening quarter, Ballantyne was back with a tally of his own three minutes into the second to level the game at three. Dartmouth's third and fourth unanswered goals were both scored by Paul, giving the Green their first two-goal advantage of the game.
Â
Having been kept out of the net for 22 minutes, Brown stormed back, scoring just eight seconds into the third to get back within one. A
Mike Connolly marker three minutes later put some distance between the teams, only to have the Bears score three in a row to take the lead (7-6). Â
Â
Brown netted its fourth unanswered goal at 13:44 of the fourth quarter, but
Peter Rizzotti cut into the Bears' run with his second goal of the year to make it an 8-7 contest. Three more goals for the visitors put Brown up by four, its biggest edge yet. The score remained the same for the last 3:35 of the game.
