ORLANDO, Fla. – Dartmouth men's tennis junior
Charlie Broom dropped his NCAA First-Round match to Mississippi State's Giovanni Oradini, 6-3, 6-1 at the USTA National Campus on Monday.
Â
Broom and Oradini (who were ranked 69th and 61st, respectively, in the most recent ITA Rankings) were both listed as alternates when the bracket was released at the beginning of May. Their selections were announced right before the start of the tournament.
Â
"Charlie did a good job to have himself as prepared as he could as an alternate for the event," head coach
Chris Drake said. "I'm really glad he had the chance to come here to the NCAA Tournament, as it is both a great experience and a reward for another great season for Charlie. He is a very hard worker and I know he'll use the experience and knowledge gained from this event to keep working and improving."
Â
Playing in 93-degree heat, the match got off to a close start, but Broom was broken on a deuce point early in the set at 1-2. He had a break point to get back on the serve at 3-5 but lost it and Oradini took the first set.
Â
After going down 0-3 in the second, Broom had chances to break at 0-3 and 1-4, but could not convert, and the Bulldog ended up winning the second set as well.
Â
"Today, Oradini played a good match and Charlie wasn't quite sharp enough in the big moments and this level requires a high level of execution and consistency," Drake continued. "Congratulations to Charlie on a great season and for continuing to set a high standard for Dartmouth men's tennis."
Â
Broom wrapped up his season by going 9-11 in singles action since January and 18-14 overall. He was recently named first team All-Ivy for both singles and doubles for the second year in a row. This is the first time in his career that he has made it to the singles tournament and he is just the fourth Dartmouth player to qualify in program history.
