Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2021 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by Cape Air.
This installment focuses on
Glennis Murphy of the Big Green women's cross country team and a native of Larkspur, California.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Glennis Murphy: I am doing research with Karolina Kawiaka, an architecture professor. At the moment, I'm doing a lot of work with 3D modeling and scanning.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
GM: My favorite place on campus is probably my locker room, or the track. They are the places I feel most comfortable, and I spend so much time in them that they feel like home!
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
GM: I had a pretty difficult recruiting process, and what sold me on Dartmouth was that it was my one official visit where I actually had fun. I also really connected with the girls on the team, and it helped that campus is so beautiful.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
GM: I'm really passionate about my academics, as well as art. I've found a way to overlap my academic interests with my artistic interests because of my modified major (engineering modified with studio art), and I'm really excited to see where it takes me!
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
GM: After my parents, my grandparents on my dad's side of the family have had the greatest influence on my life. They live about 10 minutes from where I grew up, and I spent as much time at their house as I did at my own. They have really shaped who I am, through their stories and wisdom. I wouldn't be who I am without them! It's also important to mention my high school coach, who introduced me to the sport of running and taught me how to love it.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
GM: My best memory of competition has to be from Heps cross country this past year. I ran almost the entire race right next to my teammates, and I have a very specific memory of rounding a turn with about 2000 meters left, and just having the biggest grin on my face. Everything seemed to click that day, and I really felt the joy that running — especially running for your team — can bring.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
GM: My two favorite shows to binge watch are the
Great British Baking Show and
Game of Thrones. I've seen every episode of both, and re-watch them often, because I'm too lazy to start something new.
DS: You step outside tomorrow morning and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million (after taxes). What would you do with the money?
GM: First, all of the practical financial stuff that needs to get done (pay for college, invest, etc.) and then travel! I've actually never left the US, so I would probably start globe hopping and go anywhere I could think of.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
GM: Be relentlessly yourself and trust the process. Never give up, and always remember to find the joy.
