Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their fall seasons postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Abigail Brazil from Jackson, Wyoming, from the women's cross country team.
DartmouthSports.com: What have workouts been like so far?
Abigail Brazil: Workouts this fall have been hard for me because I am alone in Boston and I miss my teammates pushing me through the hardest parts of a workout. But our team has been trying to keep this socially distanced season fun by doing workout themes where we dress up in different funny outfits each week. I also have been learning a lot about myself as a runner, which is important since running is both an individual and team sport!
DS: What is your most memorable team moment?
AB: I don't know if I can narrow it down to my absolute favorite moment, but one of my most memorable team moments is a workout that we do in pine park that is always the hardest workout of the year because it includes both hills and speed work. One year, it was pouring rain during this workout and we could barely see where we were going but it was fun to push through the hard workout together in such crazy conditions.
DS: What is your most memorable non-sports memory?
AB: My most memorable non-sports memory is a collection of moments that I took for granted before COVID. The track team locker room has an energy that is difficult to describe and is something that I really miss right now. Whether it was just seeing all my friends when I walked in after a hard day or whether it was dancing and singing to our favorite songs, many of my favorite memories at Dartmouth occurred there.
DS: Do you have any hidden talents?
AB: Growing up in Wyoming, some of my secret talents are entertaining myself for long bus rides and being able to drive long distances without stopping. I also grew up skiing, both downhill and cross country, and love taking my friends skiing at Dartmouth!
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
AB: If I could swap places with one teammate, it would be Julia or
Corinne Robitaille. I think it would be fun to have a twin because they are your built-in best friend, and when you are both runners, they are also your built-in training partner!
DS: What are your plans after Dartmouth (as much as you can plan for anything during this pandemic)?
AB: After receiving my BA at Dartmouth, I am planning to continue my studies at Thayer to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering. After that, I am planning to either continue my education to get a masters or to enter the workforce as a mechanical engineer. I would love to work for a med tech or green tech startup company to try to make a difference in as many lives as I can with my career.
DS: What was the best gift you ever received?
AB: I think the best gifts are not things, but experiences. I am so grateful to my parents for all the road trips they took us on growing up to explore many different National Parks. Those memories stick with me as some of my favorites growing up and allowed me to explore so many places in the West. Even after coming to college, I try to always say yes to any fun adventures my friends think up because those memories are gifts that will last long after I graduate from Dartmouth.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life and why?
AB: My team and coach have had the most influence in my life since coming to Dartmouth. By believing in me, my coach
Courtney Jaworski has taught me to believe in myself which pays off not only in running, but also in life. My team as a whole is a collection of all types of people, so they have taught me so many lessons on and off the track. One teammate who had the most impact on me was Angela Ortlieb (Dartmouth '19), who taught me the importance of enjoying every day and every run, even if my legs may not be feeling good that day!
