BOCA RATON, Fla. — Freshman
Angela Zhang carded a 73-72—145 (+1) in the first two rounds of the FAU Winter Warmup on Monday, leaving her in fourth place while helping Dartmouth finish the day in fourth place in the 14-team field with a 306-296—602 (+26). The Big Green also have the best score of the four Ivy League teams participating with Yale three strokes back, Princeton 11 back and Columbia 20.
Seton Hall has the lead at 8-over par (584), 10 strokes ahead of Arkansas State, and Xavier sits in third at 24-over. The individual leaderboard features a tie at the top between Seton Hall's Mia Kness and Yale's Amy Gianchandani with a 1-under 143. The only player between the leaders and Zhang is another Pirate in Carolina Ronchel at even par.
The shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. on the par-72, 6,017-yard course at Osprey Point Golf Club had Zhang teeing off on the ninth hole in windy conditions, but that didn't fluster the freshman as she birdied the par-5 hole to begin her day. She added three more over her first tour of the course along with five bogeys to wrap up the round at 1-over. The back nine included some rain, as did the first nine in the second round as Zhang bogeyed two of her first six. But she recovered to sink four more birdies to offset two more bogeys to make par on her second 18 and leave her in fourth place.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Lees, an All-Ivy League First Team performer as a rookie last year, ran into some trouble early on with a pair of double bogeys in her first nine holes while mixing in a birdie and two bogeys. But from there, she settled in and played the second nine at even par with another birdie for a 5-over 77, then put together a 1-over 73 on her second loop with four birdies to her credit. Her 150 (+6) left her in a tie for 15th.
Another freshman,
Samantha Yao, tied for 30th with a 153 (+9) with three birdies in her two rounds and nine consecutive pars before ending with a bogey on her first tour. Sophomore
Kristen Chen had a bit of a roller-coaster ride in the morning round with two birdies but a 7-over 79 before finding consistency in the afternoon with a 3-over 75 with 13 pars and a birdie, tying for 39th just a stroke behind Yao. Senior
Maddie Nelson completed the Dartmouth fivesome with a pair of 80s on the day, tying for 56th.
The final round will tee off on Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. with the Big Green group starting in the middle of the front nine.
