SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey defeated Union by a score of 2-0 on Friday evening.
This is the first time the Big Green have shut out the Dutchwomen at Messa Rink since a 6-0 victory on Jan. 5, 2013.
Both goals were unassisted, being scored by junior
Jennifer Costa and freshman
Catherine Trevors. Junior
Kayla Wormsbecher was excellent in net with her 34 saves, earning her first collegiate shutout.
"I am super proud of our team this evening," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "We really bought into the process. Kayla was absolutely outstanding again and our team played with tremendous grit and energy. Everyone committed to play a 200-foot hockey game and our penalty kill was spot on, killing off two 3v5s in the third. It was a great all-around game and I am very happy for our student-athletes."
The start of the first period was fast-paced, with the Big Green leading in shots from the get-go. At 8:20, Costa went head-to-head with goalie Bella McKee and won, giving Dartmouth (6-17-3, 3-13-3) a 1-0 lead. The Dutchwomen had some good chances in the final minute, but the Green still had a 15-7 shot advantage after the first 20 minutes.
A Union (5-21-5, 5-11-3) giveaway behind Dartmouth's net made way for another Big Green goal. At 4:44 of the second, Trevors intercepted a pass, wrapped around and backhanded the puck in for her team-leading ninth tally of the season.
Three Dartmouth penalties over a four-minute span in the third period resulted in over two minutes of 5-on-3 play, but the Big Green came out unscathed thanks to some huge saves by Wormsbecher. With a combined six penalties committed in the final period and with not much even-strength play happening, both netminders worked hard to turn away everything sent their way to keep the score the same.
The Green had a 36-34 shot advantage. For the third game in a row, their penalty kill was spot on.
Dartmouth will be back at it on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against Rensselaer.
