HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey played a great third period, scoring twice in a short amount of time to get within one goal, but ultimately fell to St. Lawrence, 3-2, at Thompson Arena on Friday.
Lotti Odnoga and
Currie Putrah were credited with the goals, while
Sara McClanahan,
Gabby Billing,
Megan Cornell and
Celine Pietraszek also ended the game with a point. In net,
Kayla Wormsbecher had 29 saves.
"What an incredible comeback attempt," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "We couldn't be prouder of our girls. The resiliency the team continues to show is absolutely inspiring. This was a fantastic game by every single person. The third period was incredible. We put up 21 shots on net and attempted 33 and that was by far the best we've played all year. It was really fun to watch and be part of this game."
The Big Green played very well in the opening stanza, but it was the visitor that broke the scoreless tie at 8:38. Wormsbecher looked good in the first 20 minutes, making 14 saves to keep the game close.
A pair of St. Lawrence (13-13-7, 8-9-4) goals netted less than two minutes apart turned a one-goal lead into a 3-0 game. A breakaway opportunity for Billing late in the second looked promising but went just wide. Dartmouth (7-18-3, 4-14-3) survived 45 seconds of 5-on-3 and headed to the third still down by three.
The Big Green stole some of the momentum back in the third period. Odnoga opened scoring at 3:02, shooting from the top of the circle and finding the back of the net with 14 seconds remaining on the power play. Three minutes later, Putrah backhanded the puck past an unsuspecting Lucy Morgan to get Dartmouth within one. With an empty net and a Saint in the box in the final minute, the Green had many close calls, but just could not score that equalizer.
After trailing in shots during the first two periods, Dartmouth had a 21-shot third period to end the game with a 38-32 advantage. Both teams scored on the power play.
Dartmouth will end the season with a 3 p.m. game against Clarkson on Saturday. Afterwards, seniors
Christina Rombaut,
Sydney Hill,
Bailee Brekke and
Charlie Plumb will be recognized.
