The Big Green are back in action at 11 AM and 1:30 PM on Saturday
LONGWOOD, Fla. – Dartmouth softball started The Spring Games on the wrong end of the stick Saturday with two losses at the hands of Florida International and Albany. The Big Green fall to 3-4 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 3-6 and the Great Danes up their record to 4-3.
Vs. Florida International:
Florida International led the entire way and defeated Dartmouth, 7-2, in the first game of the day.
FIU's pitcher, Allison Muraskin, only allowed three Big Green hits and struck out 10 on her way to a complete-game victory. Calista Almer, Micah Schroder and Tatyanah Castillo collected the hits and Billie McFadyen finished with an RBI.
The Panthers took control from the top of the first. After Madie Augusto struck out the first batter she faced, FIU singled and stole second, then hit back-to-back doubles, walked and singled to take a 3-0 lead after one.
FIU pushed its lead to 4-0 in the second. A leadoff single turned into a stolen base and the runner advanced to third on an error. That run was brought in on a sacrifice fly.
Augusto only allowed one more hit until the sixth when the Panthers plated a run on a leadoff double and an RBI single. FIU's sixth and seventh runs came across in the seventh on on a two-RBI single.
Dartmouth finally scored during its last ups. Schroder singled and Jade Bravo pinch ran, then Castillo smacked a pinch-hit double and Emily Lipsett ran for her to put runners on second and third. McFadyen then hit a sacrifice fly to score Bravo and Lipsett came in on a wild pitch.
Vs. Albany: Â
Dartmouth led 6-4 in a back-and-forth affair after the top of the fourth inning, but Albany scored two in both the home half of the fourth and fifth to steal an 8-7 victory over the Big Green in the second game of the day.
Billie McFayen went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Schae Nelson hit a solo homer in the sixth.
Brooke Plonka struck out seven batters over 6.0 innings and allowed just four hits.
The Big Green offense struck first. Calista Almer walked and McFadyen doubled to put runners on second and third. McFadyen then scored on a passed ball to make it a 2-0 Dartmouth lead after the first half inning.
Albany immediately answered and took the lead in the home half. After Plonka struck out the first two batters, Morgan Petty hit a solo home run and Madison Petrella slammed a two-run shot to give the Great Danes a 3-2 advantage after one.
The contest quickly became tied in the very next inning. Weekly reached on a fielder's choice and swiped second. Then a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases for McFadyen, who reached on a free pass, to even the score at three.
After Albany retook the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly, Dartmouth scored three runs in the fourth. The first was plated on a double-steal to score Almer from third. The next two came across on back-to-back triples off the bats of Schroder and Shipley to make it a 6-4 Big Green lead.
With runners on second and third for Albany in the fourth, two Dartmouth errors allowed both runs to score. The Great Danes then plated two more in the fifth on an RBI double and a sac fly to make it an 8-6 Albany advantage.
Nelson hammered her third home run of the year to lead off the sixth, but it was not enough as Dartmouth stranded the tying run on third.
The Big Green are back at The Spring Games to take on Western Michigan at 11 a.m. and Loyola Chicago at 1:30 p.m.
