HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey played its first game at Thompson Arena in almost a month on Friday afternoon, suffering a 4-2 loss to Colgate.
Freshman
Catherine Trevors had a two-point performance, assisting on the first goal by sophomore
Gabby Billing before scoring her own. Classmate
Sara McClanahan also ended up on the scoresheet by assisting on Billing's tally. Junior netminder
Kayla Wormsbecher had 29 saves while being saddled with the loss.
"I am really proud of our girls," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "I feel like every time we play, we continue to get better. Colgate is a really good team, the shots were even, the scoring chances were even and we were doing so many good things that are taking us in the right direction. Kayla was outstanding again and our power play was excellent. Our penalty kill was 100% and we are definitely going in the right direction."
For the first time since Jan. 24, the Big Green got on the board first, courtesy of a power-play goal by Billing at 11:40 of the opening stanza. That lead lasted until 16:26, when the Raiders' Danielle Serdachny tied the score. The first period was an even battle and shots were 11-11 heading to the intermission.
Wormsbecher was excellent in the early parts of the second period, breaking up two shorthanded breakaway attempts. Those saves helped keep the game tied until 9:07 when Colgate (14-11-6, 8-6-3) got the go-ahead. The visitors added one more at 19:42 to make it a 3-1 game going into the third period.
Trevors got Dartmouth (5-16-3, 2-12-3) back within one at 3:17 of the third period with her second of the week and the Green's second power-play tally of the game by sneaking through the five-hole. With plenty of time still remaining on the clock, the game could have gone either way, but another Raider goal at 13:32 all but ended the contest.
Shots were 33-29 in Colgate's favor. The Green went 2-for-5 with the extra player while killing off every one of the Raiders' six chances.
Dartmouth will host No. 2 Cornell at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
