BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Vermont by a score of 9-8 at Virtue Field.

Ben Martin led the team with three goals, while Matt Paul, George Prince and Tommy Rogan had two points apiece. In net, Daniel Hincks had a season-high 15 saves.

"I thought we were inconsistent in our execution today," head coach Brendan Callahan said. "We played really well in stretched and we struggled to stream plays together at times and against a good team like Vermont, it wasn't enough to get a favorite result. Vermont beat us to some key 50/50 balls off the ground, which I thought was the difference. They had a few more possessions than we did and made the most of them. I thought Danny did great in the net against some talented shooters. I love the effort that Ben played with on the offensive side of the field. This week, our focus will be on starting faster and executing for all four quarters."

The home team got on the board less than three minutes in and, by the end of the first, had a 3-0 advantage. The Big Green found their groove in the second quarter, tying things up by the 9:40 mark following goals by Rogan, Prince and Martin before taking the lead thanks to Martin and Paul (5-3).

Two Vermont (3-1 overall) tallies 57 seconds apart made it a 5-5 game, and although a third by Martin with 59 seconds to go initially put Dartmouth (3-1 overall) ahead, one more Catamount marker with 26 ticks remaining tied the score once again (6-6).

After seeing a combined nine markers scored in the second, the third quarter was a lot quieter. Vermont broke the tie early and managed to keep Dartmouth out of the net for the next 12 minutes to hold on to a one-goal lead.

The Catamounts added another tally to start the fourth quarter, making it three straight for the home team. Paul's second marker of the afternoon got the Green back within one, but Vermont got its two-goal advantage back two minutes later (9-7). It took until 3:33 before Dartmouth could respond, a first of the game and fourth of the season for Liam O'Connell. Two Big Green penalties late in the game allowed the Catamounts to hang on to that advantage through the final whistle.

Having been on the road for the last two weekends, Dartmouth will return to Scully-Fahey Field next Saturday, March 14, to host St. John's.
