April 2, 2005: No. 19 Dartmouth lifted to victory over No. 9 Notre Dame in final minutes
Ben Grinnell scored four goals, including the game winner, to lead No. 19 Dartmouth to an incredible 10-9 win over No. 9 Notre Dame at home. This was the Big Green's second top-10 upset in 12 days after a 7-6 victory over No. 4 Maryland on March 22.
The visitors took an early 2-0 lead only to have Dartmouth knot the score at two. Again the Fighting Irish scored back-to-back goals, and again the Big Green answered before taking their first lead at 5-4 on an unassisted goal by sophomore Nick Bonacci. But Notre Dame walked through the locker-room doors at the half tied at five thanks to a Jim Morrison goal.
In the third, the Green took an 8-7 advantage thanks to a goal from junior Ryan Danehy and two more from senior Ben Grinnell, leaving 15 minutes between Dartmouth and victory.
The Irish tied the game with 7:11 remaining before Grinnell scored the go-ahead tally, an unassisted tally with 2:54 to go. Notre Dame proceeded to win the faceoff, but Dartmouth forced a quick turnover and got a goal from junior Alec Hufnagle to make it 10-8 with 1:27 left. The Irish pulled within one with only 19 seconds remaining, but the Big Green were able to run out the clock.
Although it was the first time Dartmouth had upended the Notre Dame, it was not the last; in 2017, the Big Green had a very well-timed 7-6 defeat of the Fighting Irish on St. Patrick's Day.
