HANOVER, N.H. — With the 16th pick of the second round in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft yesterday, the Portland Timbers selected Dartmouth midfielder
Dawson McCartney '21. He was the only Ivy Leaguer selected in the draft and the fifth Big Green player chosen over the past four years.
In his three years playing in Hanover, McCartney was twice named to the All-Ivy League Second Team and was the Rookie of the Year in the Ancient Eight in the fall of 2017, helping Dartmouth win the conference crown. The 6-1, 175-pound native of Voorhees, New Jersey, scored eight goals — including the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over UMass in 2019 — and provided 14 assists over 43 games, 40 of which he started. His four assists in his junior campaign led the Big Green, and he tied for team-high honors as a freshman with eight helpers.
McCartney is the first Dartmouth player selected since Eduvie Ikoba '19 (FC Dallas) and Justin Donawa '19 (Columbus Crew) were picked in the third round of the 2019 SuperDraft. In the prior year, both Wyatt Omsberg '18 (first round) and Matt Danilack '18 (fourth round) were taken by Minnesota United and Philadelphia Union, respectively.
