HANOVER, N.H. --Â The Big Green returned to the field for the first time in nearly two years, defeating Holy Cross by a score of 3-2 on Friday evening.Â
Junior forwardÂ
Allie Winstanley scored or assisted on all three goals and notched the game winner with three minutes remaining in the game.
Â
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half, but both squads challenged the opposing goalkeeper. Junior goalkeeper
Charlotte Cyr fended off two shots to keep the Big Green knotted at zero with the Crusaders. Dartmouth was on the offensive and outshot Holy Cross eight to five, but despite their best efforts, the game was scoreless midway through.
Â
Action picked up quickly in the second half. Winstanley found the back of the net five minutes into play. She stole the ball from an opposing defender just outside the box and dribbled her way into scoring position before slotting the ball past the Crusaders' goalkeeper.
Â
Holy Cross tied the game in the 66th minute, scoring off a corner kick that bounced around in the box before finally being sent past Cyr. The Big Green responded quickly as just 10 minutes later freshman forward
Dasa Hase knocked the ball into the back of the net thanks to a cross from Winstanley.
Â
With ten minutes remaining, the action ramped up. Holy Cross tied the game at two goals apiece in the 81st minute and Dartmouth once again had to respond. With three minutes remaining, Dartmouth built up possession in the center of the field and two quick passes from senior midfielder
Tracey Mills and freshman forward
Hannah Curtin sprung Winstanley into the attacking third. She successfully slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Big Green a 3-2 lead.
Â
Holy Cross was unable to find another equalizer and Dartmouth secured a 3-2 victory in their first action in 22 months. Winstanley finished the game with two goals and one assist, picking up where she left off as the Big Green's leading scorer in 2019.
Â
Dartmouth returns to action, Sunday, August 29, for a home matchup against twin-state rival, Vermont. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game can be streamed on ESPN+.
