THIS WEEKEND
Having not played since November of 2019, the Dartmouth volleyball team is more than ready to kick off the 2021 season at its first of three tournaments. The Big Green will face Binghamton, host Lehigh and St. Francis Brooklyn over two days at the Lehigh Steel Tournament.
Â
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Binghamton
Like the other two opponents, the Bearcats opened their season last weekend. Binghamton traveled to Morgan State in Baltimore, Maryland, for the Towson Tournament, where it defeated Morgan State (3-1) and fell to the Naval Academy (3-0) and Towson (3-0). The last time the Big Green and the Bearcats met was exactly 11 years ago, a match that Dartmouth won (3-1).
Â
Lehigh
The host had a tough time during opening weekend on the road, coming out on the losing side in all three matches against Virginia Tech (3-2), Elon (3-1) and Toledo (3-1) at the Hokies' home invite. On Sept. 4, 2010, at the same tournament that Dartmouth defeated Binghamton, the Green also took down the Mountain Hawks by the same score.
Â
St. Francis Brooklyn
The Terriers went 1-2 at their first tournament, beating St. Peter's (3-1) while falling to Bucknell (3-2) and Delaware State (3-0). St. Francis also played a single match against Hofstra, dropping that one by a score of 3-1. The Big Green is 2-0 all-time against the Terriers, beating them in 2014 and 2018.
Â
MEET THE BIG GREEN
The 19-player roster is made up of 15 returnees (four seniors, five juniors, six sophomores) and four freshmen. Over half of the team will be opening their collegiate careers this weekend, as the pandemic prevented the Class of 2024 from having their rookie season.
Â
CAPTAINS
This year's captains are senior
Emma Moffet, junior
Grace Wiczek and sophomore
Karen Murphy. Moffet, a two-time Academic All-Ivy recipient, registered 52 kills, four assists, one ace, 22 digs and 26 total blocks as a sophomore in 2019. Wiczek was two-time all-tournament, third in points (198.5), second in kills (173) and first in kills/set (2.54) and registered a season-best 19.5 points vs. Fordham.

Â
PRESEASON POLL
Dartmouth was picked to finish in fifth place in the Ivy League's preseason poll that was released last week. The last preseason poll that was released ahead of the 2019 season saw the Big Green picked fifth, which ended up being true. Dartmouth concluded that year with a record of 10-15 and a conference mark of 4-8.
