THIS WEEKEND
After a great weekend on the road, the volleyball team will be at home, hosting the annual Dartmouth Invitational. Joining the Big Green in Leede Arena are UNH, Holy Cross and UConn and, throughout the two days, the four teams will play a total of six matches, all of which will be streamed on ESPN+.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth returned to play after almost two years last weekend, winning the Lehigh Steel Tournament and leaving PA with a 3-0 record after defeating Binghamton (25-15, 25-17, 25-14), Lehigh (24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-13) and St. Francis Brooklyn (25-19, 23-25 25-21, 25-23).
·     The underclassmen were the difference maker; five of the top seven point-scorers were sophomores.
·    Â
Ellie Blain played well in all three matches. She had double-doubles against both Lehigh and St. Francis and ended up with a total of 55 kills (4.58/set), .277 hitting percentage, one assist, two aces, 35 digs (2.92/set) and three block assists for 58.5 points.
·    Â
Karen Murphy and
Makenzie Arent both helped lead Dartmouth to victory with their two double-doubles. Murphy was first on the team in assists (83) and second in digs, while Arent was second in assists (34) and third in digs (34).
Â
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
UNH
The Wildcats enter the weekend with a 4-3 record after going 1-2 at the Mercer Tournament and 2-1 at their home Holly Young Tournament. UNH also played a stand-alone match against Holy Cross, winning by a score of 3-1. The last time Dartmouth faced UNH was in October of 2019, a match the Big Green won, 3-1.
Â
Holy Cross
The Crusaders have had a tough start to the 2021 season, going 1-7Â after dropping all three matches at both of their tournaments and a Wednesday-night matchup against UNH. The one redemption is the 3-0 defeat of Merrimack that came between the invites. Dartmouth and Holy Cross have met three times in the past and all three were Big Green victories.
Â
UConn
The Huskies are 3-3 so far this fall, beating Albany, Lafayette and CCSU while falling to Syracuse, Buffalo and Rutgers at the two tournaments they have attended. The Dartmouth Invitational will be their third of four straight invitationals. Since 2012, UConn has won all but one of the teams' four meetings.
