HANOVER, N.H. — Freshman forwardÂ
Hannah Curtin scored with two and a half minutes left in the second overtime to give the Big Green a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on Thursday evening.
Freshman forwardÂ
Dasa Hase tallied the first goal of the night and junior goalkeeperÂ
Charlotte Cyr had five saves.
Â
Dartmouth (4-0-1) was tied 0-0 at the half for the fourth time in five games. The Big Green have yet to score a first half goal this season. Despite the 0-0 score line, they were able to control the pace in the first 45 minutes. They outshot Sacred Heart (1-3-1) 9-5 and controlled possession 57% to 43%.
Â
The Pioneers adjusted well at halftime and came out firing. They struck in the 68th minute when a ball was played behind the Dartmouth defense and slotted into the bottom of the net past Cyr. The Big Green trailed 1-0 and did not wait to respond. Just 2 minutes later, Hase scored off a ball that deflected off senior midfielder
Michael Guptill in the box. Guptill was credited with the assist.
Â
Neither team could find the back of the net again in regulation. Sacred Heart saw some serious opportunities, but the Dartmouth back line stood tall, and the game went to overtime despite the Big Green being outshot 8-6 in the second half.
Â
From the start of the first overtime period, it was all Dartmouth. They came out swinging and applied pressure early and often to the Pioneer defense. The two teams were still knotted through the first 10 minutes, but the Big Green was knocking on the door.
Â
With just two and a half minutes left in the game, Curtin was able to fire the ball into the right side of the net thanks to junior forward
Allie Winstanley who started the play in the box and assisted the overtime winner. The goal secured Dartmouth's fourth win of the season and the team remains unbeaten through five games.
Â
The Big Green return to action, Sunday afternoon when they travel to Fairfield, Conn., to take on Fairfield at 2 p.m. Â
