HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team gave No. 4 Colgate all it could handle on Saturday, but ultimately fell to the Raiders at home. The Big Green dropped its second straight one-goal game to a top-10 foe, as they were bested by a score of 3-2 at Thompson Arena.
The Big Green got off to a strong start against Colgate and led 2-1 after the first period. However, two unanswered goals in the second period from the Raiders were the deciding factor. Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Emerson was stellar for Dartmouth, stopping 34 of 37 shots on goal against one of the country's best offensive units.
Freshman Cally Dixon scored the first goal of her collegiate career early in the first, while
Laura Fuoco registered her second goal in as many games.
Kenzie Bachelor and Izee Powell recorded assists for the Big Green.
Colgate won the faceoff battle between the teams, winning 33 of 56 draws throughout the game. The Big Green fell to 1-6-0, all in ECAC Hockey conference play, while Colgate improved to 13-1-0 on the year with a 4-1-0 conference mark.
The Big Green jumped out to another strong start, as Dixon capitalized on a Colgate turnover, ripping a shot past Colgate goaltender Hannah Murphy to take a 1-0 lead. Dartmouth continued to apply pressure in the opening stages of the first, challenging Murphy with a trio of shots in quick succession, which were turned aside.
Colgate battled to tie the game throughout the opening period, as Emerson came up large with numerous saves to preserve the lead. The Raiders broke through in the 19th minute of the first, as Colgate's Kristýna Kaltounková found the back of the net to tie the game.
Dartmouth responded just over a minute later with just five seconds left in the period. Fuoco won a faceoff and parked herself in font of Colgate's net, which set her up for a shot following a blast from the point off
Kenzie Bachelor's stick. Fuoco slid the puck through Murphy's five-hole to give Dartmouth a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The second period was all Colgate, as the Raiders outshot Dartmouth 11-6 and found the back of the net twice to take a 3-2 lead. Colgate's second goal of the day came off the stick of Tessa Holk, who beat Emerson on a sharp-angle shot.
The Raiders took the lead in the final minute of the second period after
Lauren Messier was sent to the penalty box for a hooking call. Danielle Serdachny rifled a shot past Emerson from the point to give Colgate its first lead of the game.
Emerson continued to compete throughout a tough third period for the Big Green. Dartmouth was outshot 17-6 in the final period and was anchored by their netminder, as Emerson stood tall as the pressure mounted in front of her net.
Dartmouth was unable to find an equalizer as Colgate picked up its 13th-straight win over the Big Green. The Big Green fell to 33-19-3 against the Raiders in the all-time series.
Dartmouth will face its first non-conference opponent of the season this Tuesday, as the Big Green travel to take on Post. Puck drop is slated for 1:30 p.m.
