BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to the No. 13 Vermont Catamounts on the road on Tuesday night. The Big Green tied the game, 1-1 early in the second period, but three unanswered goals for the Catamounts sealed the win for the home team at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Junior forward
Abby Grexton scored her first goal of the year to equalize the game in the second frame. Dartmouth's lone goal was assisted by
Sophie Robinson, her third of the year. Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Emerson made 27 saves for the Big Green, including 11 in the final period.
Vermont slightly edged Dartmouth out in the faceoff battle, winning 26 of 50 draws Tuesday night. Freshman
Vanessa Stamper won 62.5 percent of her faceoffs, while
Lauren Messier and
Laura Fuoco combined to go 3-0 in the circle.
The Catamounts and Big Green were unable to generate offensive opportunities in the early stages of the first period. Vermont capitalized on a power play opportunity in the 11th minute, as Theresa Schafzahl scored her 14th goal of the season to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of the frame as Vermont took the one-goal lead into the locker room. The Catamounts tested Emerson with eight shots on goal, while Dartmouth challenged Vermont's goaltender, Jessie McPherson with six shots.
In the third minute of the second, Grexton came down the left side of the ice with speed, setting herself up for a shot. She powered a shot through McPherson with defenders at each side to tie the contest, 1-1.
A competitive period shifted Vermont's way late in the frame. Tynka Pátková and Natalie Mlynkov scored 39 seconds apart to give the Catamounts a 3-1 lead heading into the third.
The Big Green were unable to test McPherson with quality chances in the final period as time continued to expire. Vermont's Sini Karjalainen found the back of the net with under two minutes remaining to increase Dartmouth's deficit to three goals.
Dartmouth fell to 3-8-0 and 2-2-0 in non-conference competition, while Vermont improved to 11-5-1 on the season. The Big Green dropped to 39-8-0 against the Catamounts in the all-time series.
The Big Green travel for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests this weekend. Dartmouth first battles St. Lawrence on Friday, December 2 at 6 p.m. before a tilt against Clarkson on Saturday, December 3 at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
