ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team fell to Cornell, 1-0, in ECAC Hockey and Ivy League action on Saturday evening at Lynah Rink.
Dartmouth moves to 1-8-1, 1-5-1 while Cornell improves to 7-5-0, 5-3-0.
Cooper Black finished with 26 saves. The Big Green combined to block eight shots.
Travis Mitchell scored the lone goal of the game. Matt Stienburg and Gabriel Seger had the assists. The Big Red combined to block 18 shots.
The Big Red jumped out to an early in the opening few minutes. Cornell won a faceoff in the Dartmouth defensive zone and played the puck back to Mitchell, who shot it past Black to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.
The Big Green nearly equalized midway through the second period.
Tanner Palocsik played a long pass through the middle to
Matt Hubbarde. Hubbarde split the defense and was through on goal, but his shot nicked off the pipe.
Cornell almost added to their lead early in the final frame. A turnover by Dartmouth in their defensive zone led to a 1v1 on goal. Jack Malone attempted to sneak one around Black, but Black stood tall to keep it a one-goal game.
Midway through the period, the Big Green went on the power play and came close to taking advantage. Palocsik had space from the point to fire off a shot towards goal. Cornell goaltender Ian Shane stretched out to make the glove save to keep Dartmouth off the board.
The Big Green pulled Black in the final few minutes and kept the puck down in the Cornell defensive zone. Dartmouth had eight shots in those final few minutes, eight of which were blocked by the Big Red.
Dartmouth makes its return to Thompson Arena on Friday evening against UMass Lowell. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
Notes: This was the first time Dartmouth was held scoreless this season.
