HANOVER, N.H. – Five goals scored in each of the first three quarters lifted Dartmouth men's lacrosse over St. John's at home on Saturday, 17-10.
With his five points from two goals and three assists, fifth-year
George Prince became the 23rd player in program history to reach 100 career points and the first since Ari Sussman in 2010.
Colin McGill led both teams with six goals and three assists for a career-high nine points. In net,
Daniel Hincks won his fourth game, making seven saves and allowing seven goals.
Matt Paul and
Henry Bonnie also had hat tricks.
The last time the Big Green had a 4-1 start to their season was in 2004.
Dartmouth (4-1) vs. St. John's (1-6)
The start of the first quarter was very eventful with four goals in four minutes. Paul kicked things off 47 seconds in, while Prince and McGill made it a 3-0 game two minutes after that. St. John's got one back soon after, but Dartmouth answered with two more tallies to pull ahead by four with 7:04 remaining. Things quieted down from there and those proved to be the last goals of the quarter (5-1).
The Red Storm scored their second tally early in the next quarter to get within three, but four Big Green goals in 2:14 started to put the game out of reach. The last two netted by McGill – his third of the game and with the extra player – and Prince were scored just nine seconds apart. St. John's ended the run with 9:48 to go and all was quiet until Paul netted another in the final minute. With no time remaining, a last-second desperation shot by the visitors' goalie paid off, getting them back within six (10-4).
Goals by
Peter Lapina and a fourth for Paul started the second half on the right foot. A pair of St. John's goals in an 11-second span got the visitors back in the game before McGill answered 11 ticks after that. Tallies by Bonnie and yet another from McGill made it a nine-goal game, while one more for the Red Storm wrapped up the third quarter (15-7).
A fifth tally for Paul and a sixth by McGill 50 seconds apart in the fourth quarter gave the Big Green a 10-goal advantage. With just under 10 minutes to go,
Mason Morel made his collegiate debut in net. The Red Storm scored the last three goals of the game.
Dartmouth will be at Ohio State on Tuesday, March 22.
