GREENVILLE, N.C. — Dartmouth senior
Mark Turner played a bogey-free round to wrap up the ECU Intercollegiate, sinking one birdie and 17 pars to climb 17 places in the standings into a tie for 18th with a 7-over 223. His performance nearly allowed the Big Green to catch Maryland as they finished two strokes behind the Terrapins in 12th place.
Southern Miss won the three-round tournament by shooting even par (864), a full 21 strokes ahead of Francis Marion, while Dartmouth shot a 302-314-307—923 (+59) in the 12-team field.
The Big Green teed off at 9:12 a.m. this morning, with Maryland and Mount Olive, from the 10th hole of the 6,830-yard, par-72 course known as 1966 Ellis Maples at Brook Valley Country Club. Turner parred each of the holes on the back nine to start his day, and after another par on the first hole, he sank a birdie on the 509-yard par-5 second. That was the only deviation from par for him on the day, and his 71 (-1) was the fourth-best score across the 78-player field.
Every other Dartmouth golfer had at least one birdie on the day as well, led by graduate captain
Jason Liu with three. But he also suffered three double-bogeys that left him at 5-over par today and 12-over (228) for the tournament, tied for 30th overall.
Sophomore
Alex Gu had a bit of a wild ride to open his round, starting with a double bogey, followed by two birdies and three bogeys over the next five holes. He did settle down from there with eight pars over the last 12 holes, finishing up with a 7-over 79 for the 18 and 21-over (237) for the tournament, tying him for 62nd.
Freshman
Justin Lee ended up two strokes better than Gu over the three rounds and tied for 53rd but one stroke behind him today with an 8-over 80 and one birdie on the 419-yard, par-4 fourth hole. Senior Charles Baker birdied the same hole en route to an 86 (+14).
Dartmouth will be back in action this weekend for the Battle at Rum Pointe hosted by Iona at Rum Pointe Seaside Golf in Berlin, Maryland. The first two rounds will take place on Saturday with the third and final round the following day.
