HANOVER, N.H. – Four members of the Dartmouth women's rugby team have been named nominees for the 2021-22 MA Sorensen Award.
Given annually to the top women's college player in the country, the MA Sorensen Award is sponsored by the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle and has been presented each of the last three years. The award is named for MaryAnn Sorensen, a trailblazing prop for William & Mary and then for the USA. She was a huge part of the USA's 1991 Women's Rugby World Cup win, and has continued to excel as a player, coach and doctor.
Lilly Durbin ended her fifth year with a team-leading 15 tries and 75 points after having not played since her first year in Hanover because of injuries. She scored the final try in the 28-18 defeat of Army West Point in the NIRA Championship game.
Emily Henrich, the 2019 MA Sorensen Award winner, was first in assists (14), second in tries (9) and third in points (60). She recorded a season-high 15 points in the win over Sacred Heart, scoring two tries and adding one conversion and one PK.
Idia Ihensekhien wrapped up her fifth year fifth on the team with 30 points. She had two tries in the national finale and was named the NIRA Championship MVP for her major contribution to the victory.
Ava Procter ended her sophomore season with 15 points from a trio of tries. Her first collegiate try came in the first game of the year against LIU, while her other two came in the 45-31 victory over Harvard in October.
The winner of the award will be announced in a few weeks after another round of voting and will then receive the award on June 11, 2022, at the Washing Athletic Club gala event in Seattle, Washington.
