Dartmouth Defeats Merrimack for Third Straight Win

The Big Green scored multiple goals in all four games of their homestand
HANOVER, N.H. – Senior captain Meg Barnes scored her first goal of the season just over six minutes into the game, and the Dartmouth field hockey team wouldn't trail as the Big Green defeated visiting Merrimack, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. The win is Dartmouth's third straight, its longest winning streak since the 2017 season, as the Big Green head into Friday's Ivy League opener at Cornell with a 3-3 overall mark.
"Coming into this game, we wanted to try some new things," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "Doing new things is always a little bit difficult. We managed to put the plan into action and get a result, which is important. Today was a good piece of our preparation for Ivy League play."
Dartmouth scored twice on Sunday to increase its streak of scoring multiple goals to four straight games, its longest streak since 2018. The Big Green's 12 goals over four games also mark their most scored in any four-game streak since scoring 15 between Sept. 18 and Oct. 3 of 2015.
The Big Green fired the game's first six shots, with the sixth giving them a 1-0 lead. Off a penalty corner, Piper Edwards inserted to Barnes, who blasted a shot past Merrimack goalkeeper Isabelle Gardiner at the 6:23 mark.
Late in the third, the Big Green doubled their lead as a succession of chances right in front of the cage saw Gardiner make two saves, before the third opportunity was put home by Gabriela Braceras for her first-career goal. Dartmouth now has 15 goals on the season, behind nine different goal scorers.
A defensive fourth quarter saw just two shots in the stanza, both by the Warriors, the second of which got them on the scoreboard with only 1::54 remaining. Dartmouth held on from there, wrapping up the 2-1 victory.
Final shots were 19-9 in favor of Dartmouth while the Big Green held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Gardiner finished with eight saves for Merrimack, and Post tallied six for Dartmouth.
"It's always fun to win games," said Egner. "It's important to learn how to win and that's something we've been talking about – how to close games out. To give away a goal in the fourth quarter, it shows that we still have some work to do there, but a win's a win. To go into Ivy play at .500 is a really good place for us to be starting off that phase of the season."
The Big Green hit the road next weekend for a pair of games, beginning with the Ivy League opener at Cornell on Friday 4 p.m. on ESPN+. Dartmouth will also play at Syracuse on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

"We have a really deep forward line and being able to rotate is really important for us to be able to press with the intensity that we want," said Egner. "And then for them all to get in on the goal scoring, it's really, really helpful. I think we could have gotten a few more today if we worked a little harder, and that's probably going to be where some of our focus will be this week."The Big Green would not be denied!
