PHILADELPHIA — Freshman Lucia Campaño scored just 2:09 into Sunday's game, but La Salle evened the score with six seconds remaining in the first quarter and went on to score once in each of the proceeding quarters to defeat the Dartmouth field hockey team, 3-1. The game was played at Penn's Ellen Vagelos Field. Trailing by two heading to the fourth, the Big Green were able to generate some sustained offensive pressure, but were unable to get a shot off.
With the nonleague loss, Dartmouth falls to 4-6 overall. La Salle improves to 9-4.
"We did come out with quite a strong start, and I thought we did a nice job of getting ourselves on the board early," said Dartmouth head coach
Mark Egner. "It's something we've been trying to improve on, how we start the games and how we create offensive opportunities. Unfortunately, we let La Salle back into the game and they're a talented team."
Dartmouth sophomore goalkeeper
Ava Carlson was forced to make an early save just 20 seconds into the contest, but the Big Green turned the tables from there. In the span of just over a minute, Dartmouth generated three penalty corners, the third of which led to the game's opening goal.
Freshman
Ella Bowman fired the ball towards cage, but it was deflected by an Explorers' defender high into the air. As the ball was coming down, Campaño redirected the ball into the net in impressive fashion, giving Dartmouth a 1-0 lead just 2:09 into the game.
"We had a good start," said Campaño. "We scored first and that's something we've wanted to do because the last few games, we were scored upon first. We did our job and were doing well, but with time, it dropped a little bit and it showed in the results."
Both teams had chances as the first quarter progressed, but La Salle came on strong late in the stanza. Carlson made two saves in the final minute, but couldn't stop Tatum Johnson from pulling the Explorers even after one quarter of play.
Midway through the second quarter, La Salle took its first lead, as Clara Larripa converted a direct shot on a penalty corner.
The Big Green fired the first three shots of the third quarter, with no chance better than just over three minutes. Freshman
Riley Dumigan found herself directly in front of La Salle goalkeeper Emily Streib, who cut down the angle and made a strong save to keep La Salle ahead.
With just over a minute left in the third, the Explorers scored on a direct shot off a penalty corner to make the score 3-1. The Big Green created a corner as the third quarter expired, but couldn't capitalize.
The fourth quarter saw plenty of pressure on both sides, but just one combined shot, by La Salle, as the Explorers wrapped up the two-goal victory.
Final shots were 15-10 in favor of La Salle while penalty corners were even at six. Carlson made seven saves for the Big Green while Streib tallied three for the Explorers.
"It was a game where we battled right until the end and we continued to try to push and get opportunities," said Egner. "But ultimately, we're ending up on the wrong end of a lot of these close games and we need to figure that out."
Dartmouth remains on the road next weekend to face Yale on Friday and Sacred Heart on Sunday (in a game to be played at Yale's field). Friday's contest is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
