Dartmouth Picked Third in Ivy League Preseason Baseball Poll

The Big Green finished third in the standings in 2022
HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office announced the results of its 2023 Preseason Baseball Poll today with Dartmouth picked to finish third, garnering one first-place vote. Defending Ivy League co-champion Columbia was chosen to finish atop the standings with 124 points while 12 of the 16 voters picked them to win the league, while the other co-champ, Penn, was pegged for second with 113 points and three first-place votes.
Harvard ranked behind the Big Green in fourth place with 75 points with Yale not far behind in fifth with 68. Rounding out the poll were Brown (45), Princeton (31) and Cornell (29).
The Big Green finished the 2022 campaign with a 24-19 overall record and 14-7 mark in league play, putting them in third, three games behind Columbia and Penn. Dartmouth won six of their seven conference series, including taking two of three from Columbia to end the regular season, denying Columbia an outright title.
The Big Green offense that scored more than seven runs a game last year lost a couple of bats in the middle of the order, including Ivy League Player of the Year Kade Kretzschmar, but the Rookie of the Year returns in junior shortstop Tyler Cox, who ranked 10th nationally with a .402 batting average. Two others that hit over .300 are back as well, senior third baseman Connor Bertsch (.331) and junior catcher Nathan Cmeyla (.301) — both of whom received All-Ivy honors — as is the team's home run leader in senior outfielder and co-captain Kolton Freeman (8).
On the mound, Dartmouth has one returning weekend starter back, the other co-captain in fifth-year senior Trystan Sarcone. He was an All-Ivy League Second Team member last year who went 6-4 with a 4.85 ERA and led the league in fewest walks per nine innings (1.97). The bullpen will be anchored by senior Jack Metzger, another second-team All-Ivy selection who led the Ancient Eight with six saves in 2022.
Now in his 34th year at the helm, head coach Bob Whalen and his Big Green team will open the 2023 campaign with a big test right off the bat with a three-game series at Miami — ranked eighth by Baseball America and 22nd by D1Baseball — on Feb. 24-26. Dartmouth fans can get their first look at the team in person on April 1 at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park for the home-opening doubleheader against Penn. The Big Green will be vying for the chance to play in the Ivy League Tournament, which has been expanded to four teams this year.
