FAIRLEE, Vt. – The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team put forth a strong effort against Ivy League rival Brown on Saturday morning, as the Big Green retained the Atalanta Cup following the Varsity Eight's victory. Racing occurred on Lake Morey in Vermont just up the road from Dartmouth's campus; it was originally scheduled for the Big Green's home course in Hanover.
"We had a great team effort today to retain the Atalanta Cup against a well-coached and deep Brown team," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "It was a great atmosphere out at Lake Morey with a big group of friends, family and alums cheering on our crews."
The Varsity Eight began the morning by posting a time of 5:44.39, ahead of Brown in second (5:49.88). It was a matchup of a Dartmouth crew that was tied for fifth in this week's IRCA/IRA Men's Heavyweight Varsity Eight Poll against a Brown Varsity Eight which was ranked 10th in the same poll.
Brown took the Second and Third Varsity Eights by slim margins of less than four seconds in each. The 2V featured a Brown crew ranked second nationally in the Second Varsity Eight Poll, with Dartmouth not far behind (tied for fourth in the rankings).Â
The Big Green picked up victories in the 4V and 5V. In the Fourth Varsity Eight, Dartmouth finished in 6:19.65, compared to the Bears' 6:23.64. The Fifth Varsity Eight saw the Big Green come in 6:34.84, with Brown finishing in 6:41.79.
Dartmouth will return to action next weekend at Lake Morey, hosting the Lake Morey Invite on Saturday and Sunday. Georgetown, Wisconsin, Boston University and Syracuse are all coming in for the two-day regatta. Each of the teams' Varsity Eight crews are ranked in this week's poll Syracuse came in at No. 4, Dartmouth was tied for fifth, Wisconsin stood 11th, Boston University 13th and Georgetown 16th.
"We have another big test coming up next weekend," said Allen. "Three races against very good programs in one weekend will be a gut check and great preparation for Eastern Sprints and the IRAs."
