FAIRLEE, Vt. – The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team wrapped up a strong weekend at the Lake Morey Invite on Sunday, beating Boston University in all four races of the day. The Varsity Eight began the day with a nearly nine-second victory, which helped the Big Green retain the Bill Cup.
Sunday's performance came after a strong Saturday that included Dartmouth wins in six-of-eight races.
"It was a weekend of hard-fought and competitive racing on Lake Morey," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "To have crews of the caliber of Syracuse, Boston University, Wisconsin and Georgetown make the trip to the Upper Valley for a weekend of racing was very cool. I hope it becomes an annual event and tradition we can grow from here."

The Bill Cup was formed in 1941 by Edwin Lyman Bill of Rutgers, given to the winner of the Varsity Eight between Dartmouth, Boston University and Rutgers (now Dartmouth and Boston University). In the 2023 edition on Sunday, the Big Green finished with a time of 5:55.69, ahead of the Terriers (6:04.18).
Dartmouth was also victorious in the Second Varsity Eight (6:14.52), exactly six seconds ahead of the Terriers in second (6:20.52).Â
"Our 1V and 2V lineups came up short on Saturday against two very crews from Syracuse, both of whom I think will be in the conversation for medals at Eastern Sprints and the IRAs," said Allen. "We certainly learned some things on Saturday afternoon and I thought both these crews responded positively against BU."
On Sunday morning, the Big Green also finished first in the Third Varsity Eight (6:22.31). Dartmouth's A boat in the Varsity Four came in first (7:14.56), with its B boat following (7:24.72), both ahead of Syracuse in third (7:43.22). The fours consisted of members of Dartmouth's Fourth Varsity Eight.
"I thought all of our crews rowed aggressively and hard, and I was particularly impressed with our 3V and 4V lineups for winning all three of their respective races this weekend," said Allen. "
John Graves and
Richie Santry have done a terrific coaching job with this group."

Dartmouth will return to action in two weeks at the Eastern Sprints at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
