Second Varsity Eight Win Highlights Strong Effort at Yale

Dartmouth and Yale squared off in a matchup of two of the nation’s best men’s rowing teams

DERBY, Conn. — Facing the defending national runners-up, the Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team put forth an impressive performance at Yale on Saturday. The Big Green's Second Varsity Eight captured a victory by less than one second, while Dartmouth, ranked seventh in the preseason national poll, was neck-and-neck with the Bulldogs throughout the day.

"This weekend gave us a good benchmark for where we are relative to one of the best teams in the country," said Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "I'm happy for the guys in our 2V; their hard-fought win in challenging conditions was impressive. Our results across the board are performances we can, and need, to build from."

The day began with Yale's Third Varsity Eight picking up the victory with a time of 5:37.2, ahead of the Big Green (5:44.0). Dartmouth's 2V stole the show next, beating the Bulldogs by just 0.4 seconds with a time of 5:32.8, ahead of Yale's 5:33.2.

The remaining three races were also competitive, with Yale capturing the Olympic Axe in the Varsity Eight behind a time of 5:26.7. Dartmouth was just over two seconds behind (5:28.9).

In the Fourth Varsity Eight, the Bulldogs won by less than three seconds (5:38.5 to 5:41.4). The Fifth Varsity Eight saw Yale post a time of 5:41.2, ahead of Dartmouth's 5:47.9.

The Big Green return to the water in two Saturdays, hosting Brown on Saturday, Apr. 22 in the Atalanta Cup).
