HANOVER, N.H. – A late goal from
Carly Retterer proved to be the difference in an exciting match from start to finish as the Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Colgate, 1-0, on Thursday evening at Burnham Field.
"I'm thrilled with the performance," said Stacy and Nick Branca Head Coach of Women's Soccer
Taylor Schram. "We responded really well in the second half, had them on their heels and we were on the front foot creating chances. We had a lot of great performances from a rotation of players, and we were able to lock down another shutout in front of a great home crowd with a ton of energy at Burnham."
The 90-minute battle between the Big Green (2-0-1) and the Raiders (1-3-1) came down to the final few minutes when Retterer tallied her second goal of the season to give Dartmouth its second-straight 1-0 win.
After gaining possession in the midfield, Retterer quickly went on the attack, bursting forward at the defense before playing a through ball to
Aleena Seales into the Colgate box. Seales got to the ball just in time, preventing it from going out of play and passing it back across towards the middle of the box. Retterer found the opening and struck her leg at the ball to redirect it to the bottom right corner to put the Big Green in front, 1-0.
While both teams had plenty of chances throughout the contest, it was Dartmouth who had the better of the chances throughout the second half, nearly taking the lead on two occasions.
Hannah Curtin was on the verge of scoring her first goal of the year but her shot in the 70
th minute struck the crossbar.
With just under nine minutes remaining, the Big Green earned a free kick deep in their half.
Grace Faulkner sent a long ball into Colgate territory to where
Daisy Granholm flicked the ball behind the Raiders' defense to Curtin. Curtin took her touch forward into the box and passed it across the front of goal, but the pass was just past the outstretched foot of Seales and the game remained scoreless.
The Big Green defense once again played a stellar 90 minutes. Colgate finished with 18 shots, but just six were on target.
Emily Hardy posted six saves to earn her second-straight clean sheet.
"It was an amazing win," said Retterer after the game. "We battled for the whole game. Not always the prettiest soccer, but I'm really proud of us for pulling away for our first win at Burnham."
Dartmouth looks to keep the unbeaten start to the season going with a trip to Merrimack on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on NEC Front Row.
Notes: Dartmouth has now posted back-to-back 1-0 victories in the same season for the first time since 2014.
