CARRABASSETT VALLEY/WATERVILLE, Maine — With victories for juniors
John Steel Hagenbuch and
Allie Resnick, along with two other podiums, the Dartmouth ski team finished up the first day of the Colby Carnival ahead of the field with 453.5 points. Vermont closed out the day in second with 402, while Middlebury amassed 374 to claim third.
Hagenbuch continued his dominance of the men's Nordic races, winning for the third time in three events thus far this season. The junior easily outdistanced Finn Sweet of Vermont by more than 25 seconds over the 7.5K freestyle race at Quarry Road Trails in 16:18.5. Harvard's Rémi Drolet took the final step on the podium with a time of 16:51.6 with Big Green junior
Luke Allan crossing the tape next in 19:59.4. And with sophomore
Jack Lange finishing up in 17:16.4, Dartmouth had three of the top five skiers to total 130 points and win the event, well ahead of Williams (89), New Hampshire (86), Vermont (85) and host Colby (84).
The women's Nordic team also had a skier reach the podium in their 7.5K freestyle race as sophomore
Ava Thurston finished third with a time of 19:47.4, barely a second ahead of junior teammate
Jasmine Drolet (19:48.5). The third Big Green skier to skate across the finish line was first-year
Evie Walton, who claimed 13th in 20:39.2, giving the team 113 points. That sum was good for second, just behind Vermont (115), which was led by Hayley Brewster's effort that allowed her to win by more than 35 seconds (18:56.7). New Hampshire took third with 100 points even and Bowdoin fourth with 92.
Over at Sugarloaf, Resnick zoomed through the course with the fastest time on her first run, then held on to take the gold in 1:46.52, 11 hundredths of a second ahead of Middlebury's Mika-Anne Riha. The other two Big Green skiers to score for the squad also maintained their position after their first tour of the slopes with sophomore Zoe Zimmerman closing out in 11th (1:48.10) and senior
Olivia Holm tied for 20th (1:48.57). Middlebury won the event thanks to placing three skiers among the top eight to garner 119 points, while Vermont eked out Dartmouth for second, 106-102.5, led by Hanna Larsson Nathhorst who finished third (1:46.74).
For the men, sophomore
Oscar Zimmer (a two-time first-team All-American as a rookie last year) led the way for the Green in a hotly contested race with the top four skiers separated by a mere tenth of a second. His first run was the second-best time, and he held on to a podium step, wrapping up the race in third place with a time of 1:43.38. St. Michael's posted the top two times with the winner, Gray Flanagan, recording a time of 1:43.33. Sophomore Daniel Gillis provided Dartmouth with another top-10 time, improving from eighth after the first run to sixth in 1:43.73, and senior
Max Martin nipped rookie teammate
Heming Sola to provide the final Big Green points in 13th (1:44.58). Dartmouth's 108 points was good for second behind St. Michael's 122 and ahead of third-place Middlebury (100).
