Big Green Have Dominate First Day At ITA Regional

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Dartmouth men's tennis team opened the ITA Men's New England Regional on Thursday. The Big Green won 11 total matches with five individual advancing to the main draw.

Yujiro Onuma opened his day with a three set win over a player from Fairfield. Onuma dropped the opening set 6-3 but dominated the second set with a 6-1 win. In the tiebreaking third set he won 10-5 to move on. In his second match of the day, he stayed alive and advanced to the main draw with a three set win. He won the opening set 6-2 but fell 6-2 in the second set. He dominated in the tiebreaker set winning 10-4.

Zihao Yuan started his tournament with a two set win over Connor McDonald of Boston College. He won the opening set 7-6 and closed out the opening round with a 6-2 win in the second set. He advanced to the main draw with three set win in the second round. He fell 7-5 in the opening set of the second qualifier draw. He responded with a 6-0 win the second set and then dominated the tiebreaker with a 10-3 win.

Hikaru Takeda needed just two sets to win his first match over Teddy Callery of Holy Cross. Takeda won the first set 6-3 and followed it with a 6-1 win to move on the tournament. In the second round of the qualifier he won the opening set 6-1 and finished the match with a 6-4 win in the second set.

Alex Knox-Jones lost a total of just four games in his opening round win. He won the first set of the match 6-0 and closed it out with a 6-4 win in the second set. In his second match of the day he dominated the two sets winning both 6-1.

Waleed Qadir opened his tournament in dominate fashion as he dropped just one game. He won his opening set 6-0 and then completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in the second set. He punched his ticket to the main draw with a 7-5 win in the first set of his second match, he then swept the second set 6-0.

Denny Bao won his first match of the day 7-6, 6-4 to move to the second round of the qualifier. He fell in the first set of the second round 7-6 but took a 7-5 second set win. Despite a back and forth third set he fell 10-7.

Onuma, Yaun, Takeda, Knox-Jones, and Qadir will join Carlos Guerrero-Alverez and Miles Groom in the main draw on Friday. The Big Green will also have four doubles duo open the doubles tournament on Friday.
