STATE COLLEGE, PA. – The Big Green women's hockey team started their season on the road Friday, taking on #12 Penn State, a Nittany Lion team already six games into their season.
The Big Green and Nittany Lions remained even through two full periods of play and half the third period, but Penn State found a way to pull ahead, earning a 2-0 victory over the Big Green.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 0-1 on their young season.
Despite spending a lot of time in their defensive zone in the first period, the Big Green and Nittany Lions remained scoreless after the first 20 minutes of play.
Dartmouth seemed to have more chances offensively in the second period, putting seven shots on goal compared to its five in the first period. Penn State also found more offensive pressure, nearly doubling their shots on goal from the first period, throwing 14 shots towards first-year goalkeeper Michaele Hesová.
The game remained scoreless through most of the third period, but Penn State found a way to get on the board, slipping one from a low angle behind Hesová to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Big Green would go on the power play with less than ten minutes to play looking to tie the game, but the Nittany Lion defense held strong, killing the penalty and keeping it a 1-0 game.
Penn State would later add an empty net goal with under half a minute to play to seal the 2-0 victory.
"I saw a lot of heart. I thought we were extremely gusty out there," Head Coach Maura Crowell said about her team's play after the game. "Spent a lot of the game in our [defensive] zone. They put a lot of pressure on us, but, you know, we were blocking shots. We were making it difficult. That was a 0-0 game for about 50 minutes. So, I'm proud of the group. I think there's a lot to work with."
In her first game behind the bench, Crowell had Hesová make her collegiate debut, making 41 saves between the pipes for the Big Green.
"She was amazing, a calming factor back there," Crowell said. "A lot of point blank shots that she made look routine saves and they weren't. But she also had some beautiful highlight reel saves… So really, really excited for her and proud of the way she started her college career."
The Big Green and Nittany Lions will play the final game of their two-game series tomorrow at Pegula Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m.
