STATE COLLEGE, PA. – The Big Green and Nittany Lions took to the ice for one final meeting in the 2024-25 season Saturday. While Dartmouth came from behind to tie the game, Penn State continued to pressure, ultimately defeating the Big Green, 4-1.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 0-2.
Dartmouth and Penn State started Saturday's game the same way the two teams started Friday's playing scoreless. The Nittany Lions found a way to get on the board early though, scoring with just over two minutes to play in the first period.
The Big Green were able to respond just before the halfway mark of the second period.
Mia Buonarosa dumped the puck in front and in a scramble,
Dayton O'Donoghue found her again, burying the puck to tie the game at one.
Just over four minutes later though, the Nittany Lions got back on the board, taking a 2-1 lead. They would add another before the end of the second and extend their lead to three goals in the third period on the power play.
Despite being down by three goals, the Big Green created chances, including opportunities on a 5-on-3 advantage late in the period. They were unable to capitalize however, ultimately falling 4-1.
"I think you know a lot of what I saw today was better than yesterday. We worked on a lot of things as I mentioned to hone in on today systematically and I think we made it harder for Penn State, even though the score looks like maybe it didn't," Head Coach Maura Crowell said after the game. "But I think we are growing and improving every single day…So early season adversity is a good thing for our group, and we will get better this week and be ready to go next week."
The Big Green will return to the ice next weekend, traveling to RPi and Union to open ECAC Hockey play. Puck drop against the Engineers on Friday is set for 6 p.m. while the game against Union is set for 3 p.m.
Ahead of conference play, Crowell said the goal for her team is to "keep getting better. Take what we did today, learn from it. Take the good, take the bad, get better and get back to work on Monday."
