HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey welcomed the Brown Bears to Thompson Arena Friday, facing its first Ivy League opponent.
Despite taking the lead on a power play goal, the Big Green surrendered two power play goals to the Bears, ultimately falling 2-1. With the loss, the Big Green fall to 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in ECAC Hockey play.
The Big Green took their first lead of the season less than five minutes into the second period Friday, scoring on the power play.
Meredith Jensen took a shot from the blue line, leaving a rebound for
Hamilton Doster to grab and put behind the Bears' goalie for a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after, the Bears earned a power play goal of their own, tying the game at one.
Dartmouth and Brown each continued to have chances through the rest of the second period and for more than half of the third period, but the score remained knotted at one.
Late in the third period, the Big Green surrendered an interference penalty, putting the Bears on the power play. Ella Muralt was able to capitalize, giving the Bears a 2-1 lead.
The Big Green did pull their goaltender and generated multiple opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the net, dropping the game 2-1
Michaela Hesová made 25 saves in her fifth straight game between the pipes.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Maura Crowell said she liked the way her team plays at home, saying this was "our best game, most complete game".
"I think we're taking steps every time we play… As I keep saying, we're very process driven, and a lot of things got better tonight," Crowell said. "I thought we played way better as a team, just coming out of our own zone with pucks, making nice exits. Not being so panicky with it, we had a lot more [offensive] zone time which resulted in more shots to net, another power play goal, pretty good at the face off dot."
As the Big Green prepare for Saturday's matchup with Yale, both Crowell and captain
Lauren Messier believe there's a lot to take from Friday's game into Saturday.
"I think there's a lot to build off of, a lot of positives to take away from today int tomorrow's game against Yale," Messier said. "It's just the little things that we got to keep working on, like the little plays. Back checking, forechecking, working on our changes, getting our checks right. Once we work on all those things and clean those up, we're going to be in a really good spot."
Crowell agrees with her captain saying, "We did so many things well tonight, so we want to build off of that… We're going to go back to the film, pick out some things, get better in those areas. And tomorrow's a new day, so build off what we did well, understand that we are a good hockey team when we play that way."
Dartmouth's matchup with the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m. You can watch the game live at Thompson Arena or on ESPN+.
