HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey took to the ice for the second straight day Saturday, looking to build on what Head Coach Maura Crowell called its best performance of the season Friday against the Brown Bears.
While the Big Green were able to quickly respond to the first Yale goal, they were unable to find the back of the net again, ultimately falling to the Bulldogs 2-1.
Dartmouth and Yale traded a pair of goals in the first period. The Bulldogs got on the board first when a tip in front caught first-year goalie Michaela Hesová off guard.
31 seconds later and on the power play,
Lauren Messier passed the puck to
Kenzie Bachelor at the blue line who ripped a shot and found the stick of
Laura Fuoco in front. Fuoco was able to get the tip, getting the puck past Pia Dukaric to tie the game at one.
The Big Green did have an opportunity to take the lead early in the second period when Yale was forced to serve a too many men penalty. While the Big Green created chances, nothing got past Dukaric, keeping the game tied at one.
Just about 10 minutes later, Yale was able to get on the board again, taking a one goal lead.
Dartmouth continued to pressure through the latter half of the second period and the third period, but were unable to capitalize, ultimately falling 2-1.
Hesová made 36 saves between the pipes Saturday, bringing her weekend total to 61 and season total to 188.
With six games and six stellar performances under her belt, Hesová credits her success to her teammates and practice.
"I have great teammates who are helping me out in the [defensive] zone, they're blocking a ton of shots," Hesová said after the game. "We put in the work every day and putting the work in at practice makes me better so I'm just glad to be here and [my teammates] just keep me up."
Crowell gave her rookie goaltender just as much praise saying "She's been amazing, from the first game at Penn State when she made 40+ saves to today, she's been extremely consistent, gives us a chance to win every game."
While the Big Green did not come out on top, Crowell said Saturday was yet another one of her team's better performances.
"We worked harder than we've worked all year, battled really tough all the way through. We had long stretches in our [defensive] zone but we weathered the storm a little bit better today especially," Crowell said. "I'm really proud of the way we are playing. I know we aren't getting rewarded with the wins, but we are getting better and better and [wins] will come, we just have to stick to our game plan and continue to work."
With a new week on the horizon and games against Quinnipiac and Princeton on the schedule, Crowell and Hesová say the goal is to get back to work and keep improving.
"The goal is to come back on Monday and work as hard as we've been working so far, work even harder and hopefully get the first win next weekend," Hesová said.
Crowell echoed saying, "Keep going, Keep this mentality. We are building. The more consistently we can play at this high level, the better off we are going to be."
The Big Green will return to the ice at Thompson Arena on Friday, welcoming the Quinnipiac Bobcats to Hanover. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. and all youth wearing a hockey jersey will earn free admission.
