HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth Big Green welcomed the nationally ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats to Hanover, Friday. After two scoreless periods, the Big Green struck first but the Bobcats would force overtime and seal the victory.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in ECAC Hockey play.
The Big Green faced their second straight nationally ranked opponent, keeping the No. 7 Bobcats off the board for just under 58 minutes.
Dartmouth had just four shots on goal in the first period while the Bobcats had nine, but nothing got through either goaltender, keeping the game scoreless.
In the second period, Dartmouth got an early opportunity to get on the board, drawing a penalty only a minute and six seconds into the period. Unable to capitalize, the Bobcats had two power play opportunities of their own, nearly doubling the Big Green in shots in the second frame, but the game remained scoreless.
Just over six minutes into the third period after multiple odd man rushes, the Big Green finally got momentum.
Sydney Putrah controlled the puck off a face off and sent a pass cross ice to
Izee Powell. Powell sent the puck ahead to
Cally Dixon who found it in her skates, carried it into the zone, and ripped it blocker side to put the Big Green up 1-0.
"Coach has been talking about getting pucks to net all game, and we had a bit of a two on one or three on one situation. I was just thinking far pad, shoot it," Dixon said about her goal. "I saw a little bit of space under her blocker. Our goalies have been great in giving us tips, one of the tips was blocker. So, I just kind of shot it and hoped for the best and the best happened."
Dartmouth picked it up a notch with the lead, limiting Quinnipiac's chances. After a timeout with just over four minutes to go, the Bobcats pulled their goaltender. The Big Green were inches away from an empty net goal early in the 6-on-5 but the puck hit the post and stayed out.
With just over two minutes to play, Quinnipiac finally found the back of the net, tying the game at one and sending the game to overtime. Not even a minute into the 3-on-3 period,
Jenna Donohue found the back of the net, sealing the victory for her team.
After her team's best performances on the ice last weekend, Head Coach Maura Crowell said she is loving the way her team is playing.
"I think we took another step from last week, and I was really happy with how we played. Quinnipiac is a pretty deep, complete team, so I was really happy with our battled, our compete. It's not always pretty, but we're getting it done," Crowell said. "But I just love the way we're building and continue to take steps, play really hard, and make it very difficult for anyone that's going to suit up against us."
The Big Green are back on the ice at Thompson Arena tomorrow, welcoming the Princeton Tigers. While they did not get the outcome they wanted tonight, both Dixon and Crowell are excited to see what the Big Green put on the ice.
"I mean, obviously, the goal is to win, but to play well," Dixon said. "I think we're carrying a lot of momentum right now. We're playing really hard. We're playing really great. I think it's taking everybody, and everyone is performing. So, I think we continue to perform at a high level and the wins will come, the points will come, and the goals will come. I think we're on the right track."
Crowell agreed, saying "We're excited about the way we played. Felt like we deserved a win tonight and are even more hungry to get one tomorrow."
