HANOVER, N.H. – On Friday night, the Dartmouth Women's Hockey team welcomed the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks to Thompson Arena, playing the Mavericks for only the second time in program history.
Mankato got on the board late in the first period and did not look back, scoring three goals in the third period en route to a 4-0 victory over the Big Green.
Dartmouth had a power play opportunity early in the first period with the game scoreless, but were unable to convert, eventually committing a penalty of their own and sending the Mavericks onto the power play.
While the Big Green successfully killed off the penalty, Minnesota State Mankato found the back of the net with just over two and a half minutes to play in the opening frame, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
Head Coach
Maura Crowell said that intermission allowed her team to reset, but Mankato fought through, netting three goals in the middle period to extend their lead to four.
The Big Green drew two tripping penalties in the final 20 minutes of play, and despite numerus chances shorthanded and at full strength, were unable to get anything through, ultimately falling 4-0.
With the victory, Mankato ties the all-time series at one, duplicating the Big Green's 4-0 victory in the programs' first ever matchup.
Despite giving up a three goal third period, Crowell said she liked the way her team responded.
"After they got their fourth, I feel like we settled in and started playing our game again," Crowell said. "And then from that point on, you know, zero, zero."
Crowell was also happy with the chances her power play generated, echoing the biggest focus for her team headed into Saturday's matchup is to generate more offense.
"We I think got 29 shots on net, outshot them, a first for the year which is great, but creating really good grade A opportunities, getting to loose pucks, just easier ways to create some offense," Crowell said.
The Big Green and Mavericks will be back in action Saturday, November 30 with a 3 p.m. puck drop. The game will have a toy drive and the first 100 fans will receive a free Dartmouth bomber cap. All those that bring an unwrapped toy will receive a voucher to a future Big Green hockey game.
